Thank you very much. There are not many of these airplanes flying anymore. So all the more reason to photograph them while there are still some air-worthy examples out there.

For some reason I've never heard of that plane (I don't know all the planes so that's not surprising) but what era was it used in? (ex:WWI, WWII, Vietnam, etc.)

OpticaLLightspeed In reply to dsngsp [2009-03-18 01:58:21 +0000 UTC]

It was a very early U.S. trainer in the late thirties just before WWII. It was eventually replaced by the AT-6 Texan (The Pilot Maker).

I would hate to be the guy that polishes that plane

My guess is it's a hand job too, no polisher.

Do you know how long that will take to do it by hand?

No I don't and I dont think I want to know either. The owner obviously has a lot of pride in this aircraft. The finish was nothing less than Spectacular.

But finding a good affordable one is going to be the hard part

OpticaLLightspeed In reply to awash2002 [2009-03-18 23:20:11 +0000 UTC]

Ha, you said an affordable one.....NO chance in that. If you found an "affordable" one it probably was just recovered from the bottom of a lake and will require about 4-5 years of restoration work, about $750,00 - 1.5 million to fund the restoration and then the cost of bringing up to FAA standards as an air-worthy aircraft. And That's the cheap ones. If you try to aquire one that is fully restored and flight worthy that may cost you in the neighborhood of 2-5 million dollars and that dosen't include the maintenance cost per year to fly. Not trying to be negative but it's cheaper to go buy nice camera equipment and admire the aircraft from a frame on your wall or a screen-saver on your computer.LOL

The one I want to own is a Beechcraft T34 Mentor

OpticaLLightspeed In reply to awash2002 [2009-03-19 01:58:51 +0000 UTC]

You might be able to find one of those at an affordable price. If I was going to own a warbird, I'd have to go BIG, like an F4U-3 Corsair.

What N number should I pick for the plane when I do get it?

You know that's a good question, to be honest I really don't know.
