Description Once again my brilliant reds turned into pinks, ~sigh~, oh well, perhaps it’s ? Any ideas anyone ? I used Winsor Red, Deep Hue with a tad bit of Indian Red to tone down the pink; it looks almost fire-engine red in real life, but this photo ….. PINK! Now I love pink but I wanted red, so any advice on true red watercolor rendering would be appreciated, even if it’s a different brand then I use (Winsor Newton Artist Watercolors). Also the dang lines in the background where a bit gagged-ly, I had to correct them with paint, making this a multi media piece though not by much! The name is just a play on words for the black/red (pink) hybrid roses she is seated upon. Can’t believe I painted this during the Dixie tornado storm which thank Goddess did not effect us here
Anyways,
Peace and Love to all,
Ora

she is very pretty, love how the pattern on the stone and her corset match to her tattoo, amazing texture of the background too!

I can give no good advice about scanning, my scanner tend to change the colors especially dark cold reds and into warm reds. I have no other solution then to fix the color problems using Photoshop...

Thank you, it turned out pretty well, though an awkward pose for my hubby, lol. Sense then, I now have that Art Models 3 book, wonderful poses in there for future reference…

Oh, BTW, About scanning with red and getting pink. I didn't see that you added indian red. Some paints like Indian Red has a bit of white in it and it will throw off the scanner. The best red that scans well is Scarlet Lake. I used it here: [link]
With a tad of Purline Maroon (instead of indian) to tone down for the shadows and it came out great. Try that for your reds. BTW your gallery is great. No wonder your selling cards.

Thanks for the input, I wound up reading this after finishing my Carrina Spice Faery painting and have used a lot of Scarlet Lake and Perylene Violet, etc. in that piece. I don’t scan my work (anymore), I photograph it which I happen to like much better, and it’s more feasible for the larger sizes that I paint these days… You’ve got a great gallery by the way, beautiful work you’re doing…
Peace and Love

I still scan. I'm still starving artist and a camera, Or a faster computer for that matter, is still out of reach. Photo's seem to be the way to go. My favorite color is "Opera Rose" and it scans horribly. It's slightly florescent and it scan's greyish. Oh well. Glad to hear the problem is solved.

I hope at some point you can get yourself ANY kind of digital camera, unless you have a dark room, the old film (3/4 format) style like my Nikon is a processing pain in the A** not to mention expensive. I do developing but am not set up for it anymore. I haven’t tried Opera Rose, it sounds lovely though. To bad it scans so poorly, photos would most likely do the same if it’s florescent or iridescent, pearled, etc. You’ve been a wonderful help, I’ll keep working on those reds….

I'll definently put it on my wish list. Maybe I can ask for my sisters old camera. Thanks for the hints.

wow.. definitely one of my favorites! i adore the textures in this. As for the red watercolor, mix a small amount of red acrylic, like 1/3 of the total mix. It solidifies it pretty well

OMG! This is so gorgeous! Everything don't need to be red, just some of it here and there is good. I see a lot of reddish maroon(or sort of magenta) like colors. I even love the details in her clothes and tattoo on her arm. This makes me want to be her!

I sure love your style. I use W&N watercolors too. If the original is deep red then it is your scanner. It is picking up the paper underneath the layer of paint. 3 things, either paint with the paper slightly moist so the red seeps into the paper, use an opaque red like cadium or when you scan, up the saturation alittle and knock down the brightness. My old scanner had the same problem with purples.
