when it is four in the morning and you are climbing up bedsheet mountains, i hope that you will think of me, because i have tried
to leave some of myself in the plane of your quiet hands, your quiet hips.
i hope that your eyelids will not snap up but smooth away from your pupils like flowers
unfurling in stop-motion, i hope that you will remember the rectangle that my arms and
elbows floated around your waist.

and when it is seven thirty in the morning and you are finishing your third cup of coffee, i think you'll realise that you're doing better than i am, because all i can remember is
the way your veins pulsed above your skin, and it made me think that maybe your beautiful red blood loved me more than you did.
and the way you would keep talking late into the night until your voice lulled me to sleep
because if you fell asleep before me i'd cry - because i'm scared of the dark, and even more so of being alone.

and when it is nine o'clock and you climb into the seat of your car, settle yourself against the cheap vinyl, i hope that the static on the radio will remind you of the humming of our breath intermingled on damp summer afternoons
and i hope that that your undulating intestines will tingle and squirm and send tiny little shocks down to the edges of your toenails for every song i muttered to myself in the half-light of dawn blooming over the horizon
and i hope that you will remember how good all the boys and girls with fingers like tree branches were to you, and how i never asked for anything, because i am like your cousin who lives on a sinking ship. sending water splashing back overboard in desperation.

when it is two fourty three am and you can't sleep, i hope the electric blanket doesn't warm you like the warmth of my body used to - because i'm just as cold as you and i never fall asleep anymore.
