SWANTON, Ohio (WTVG) - Police in Swanton continue to investigate Friday morning after a crash Thursday night which derailed 13 cars and knocked out power to thousands. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the westbound train struck a Chevy Tahoe that had been abandoned on the tracks on Main Street north of US 20A. In addition to the 13 train cars and the Tahoe, three other parked or abandoned vehicles were struck by debris from the initial crash.According to Swanton fire chief, Mike Wolever, around 10:30 p.m. the Tahoe, being driven by a female, turned onto the tracks and stopped in the middle. He believes that the same vehicle had hit a power pole, knocking out a transformer beforehand.
The train cars were empty shipping containers heading to Chicago.
A propane tank on the ground was venting, prompting some evacuations.
No evacuation order was in effect as of 11:30 p.m.
One witness said he heard the crash from two miles away. Thousands of people lost power after the crash, but as of Friday morning Toledo Edison is showing fewer than 40 customers currently affected.
Due to the power outage, the Arrowhead mobile home park has issued a boil advisory until samples are collected and deemed safe. The water system may have depressurized.
The crash remains under investigation.
