Late Winter, Year 766 of the New Age

Glenmore, in the Glenwood
Featuring Elodi  and Kaiser  (used with permission from templarknight94 ), with mentions of Dall

"Well, this looks like as good a place as any to stop. Y'know, unless you want to press on back to Haven today..."

Elodi smiled up at his large companion, chuckling as the dark stag shot him a bashful yet unrepentant grin at his belligerent tone. "No, I think we can stop here. I'm in no rush ta get back, after all," Elodi agreed easily, lips twitching upwards as he saw his friend relax minutely.

Really. Kaiser was such a silly old soppy sometimes... Elodi had quickly caught on to the fact that his friend had a tendency to stray into the realm of overprotective, and as such wasn't keen on the fact that Elodi left his side to return to the hidden valley for half the year. It was unnecessary, considering Elodi was going back to a secure location full of family, but... he couldn't deny the thrill of pleasure that shot through him whenever he caught the Blackwood stag's displeasure at the idea of him leaving.

Nonetheless, it was necessary. And the two of them had already drawn out Elodi's leaving as much as they could. By tomorrow, Elodi would be unable to put it off any longer; it was only a short journey back to Haven now.

But they had tonight, at least. And, Elodi thought with a shiver as a cold wind blew through the trees, he wouldn't complain about an extra night with a warm companion to curl up with.

With a small smile on his face, Elodi tucked himself neatly in against Kaiser's heavily furred side and closed his eyes, flicking an ear as he heard his friend's sharply indrawn breath before the larger stag let it out and settled against him.

+

Elodi blinked and furrowed his brow with a slight frown, feeling strangely displaced. He couldn't remember what he had been doing just a moment ago, nor could he quite place where he was exactly... however, from the look of his surroundings, it seemed he was still in the Glenwood.

He blinked again and suddenly there was a doe standing in front of him, pale as the fresh snow that surrounded him. Her face was not familiar to him, but she felt like an old friend -- like somebody he loved from the depths of his soul.

Deciding to trust his gut, Elodi smiled invitingly at the doe and shifted slightly to make space for her to approach him, leaving a little patch of ground where his body had kept the snow back. "Mother," he greeted, only realising once the word had slipped out that he would say it. He was surprised at his own words for a moment, frowning in confusion because the doe, though pale, definitely wasn't his Mama. But the greeting nonetheless made the doe smile beautifully, and a second later Elodi was pleased to find himself cuddled up in her warm light.

"_____ ___ _ _______ ___ __ ______ __..." the doe whispered, her face pressed into the hollow under his throat so he could not see her face. Elodi frowned at her words, eyelashes fluttering before he pressed the doe closer to him, only barely registering that she felt oddly small against him. "Of course not. I could never forget you, Mother," he answered softly.

The doe hummed and curled in closer, and Elodi sank in against her warm hold, feeling a blanket of soft, downy heat settle over his back. They laid curled together for a moment, and Elodi somehow felt like they had had a long conversation not seconds ago, though one he somehow didn't remember. It didn't bother him though. In the swan's – no,  the doe's – loving hold, he didn't think anything could startle or upset him.

"You have forgotten your promise to me, my heart-son," the doe whispered, her confrontational words at odds with her gentle, loving embrace.

"Have I?" Elodi breathed back, tilting his head curiously as he stared out sightlessly in front of him, blind to anything but the all-encompassing feel of the swan – doe – pressed into him.

"You have. But it is alright, my son. I don't blame you. It was many of your years ago, after all... Time passes so fast for mortals."

Elodi hummed, frowning slightly at her words. Had he really forgotten a promise he made to his mother? It didn't seem like something he would do, and he was sure he remembered every word he had shared with his Mama... after she and Beau had been torn from him, he had spent many a long night thinking of them.

But nonetheless, if he had forgotten something important... "I'm sorry, Mother, I didn't mean to."

Elodi felt his companion smile into his neck, her nose strangely hard, though not painful. "I know, my love. And it's alright  you can make it up to me," she said softly, beginning to groom through his curls gently.

The pale buck perked up at the thought and smiled, nodding as he tried to look down to her but somehow saw only pale feathers. "Anything, anything at all. Anything for you," he promised earnestly, ears pricked.

The doe giggled, her bell-like laugh startling Elodi slightly, for it sounded almost childlike in its delight. However he was soon distracted as she spoke once again. "Your heart still pleases me, little Elodi. I made a good choice in you. My only son," the doe cooed, and despite the bright bubble of happiness that swelled in his breast at her praise, Elodi couldn't quite dispel the confusion at her words. After all, he wasn't his Mama's only son, she had Vita and Solas too...

"You must stay in the Glenwood, my darling. One of your sisters will have need of you soon, and it would please me if you met her," the doe whispered, still grooming him gently. "Be by the black oak, in the south wood, when the winter ice thaws and spring blooms in full. Do this for me, Elodi..."

"Elodi..."

"Elo!"

Elodi came awake with a gasp, shooting upright with wide eyes and looking around wildly. He was back where he fell asleep and, yes, Kaiser was there, the dark stag giving him a somewhat wary look. Elodi stared up at his friend, shock still clear in his expression, before he glanced at his back with a shiver, somewhat confused at the lack of a feathery cloak. "I..."

"You alright, 'Lo? You were... twitchin' a bit there." Kaiser said slowly, shifting to look at his little companion a little better. He had been awoken by the almost painfully bright glow Elodi had begun to give off at some point during the night, almost searing Kai's eyes through his lids in the process; waking Elodi had been equal parts self-defence and worry.

Elodi took a deep breath before letting it out slowly, gingerly resting back against his dark friend's warm side. Kaiser shifted to accommodate him wordlessly, hesitantly reaching out to ruffle at a few curly strands.

The touch made something wrench in Elodi's chest, and he frowned thoughtfully as he stared sightlessly over his shoulder at where his dark friend was petting him carefully. "I... I think I dreamt of my Mama..." he said unsurely, looking disturbed.

The gentle touches paused a moment before resuming, Kaiser raising an eyebrow curiously. "What, Dall?" he asked, curious. Elodi had told him all about his family when they first met, but he didn't often speak of his mother or twin. To have the spectre of Elodi's mother haunting his dreams was an odd turn.

"I... suppose so, yeah," Elodi said haltingly, though it didn't feel quite right. He fell silent, trying to remember more about his dream, but all he remembered was the feeling of love and warmth, and...

"...By the black oak, in the south wood, when the winter ice thaws and spring blooms in full..."

Elodi stood abruptly, accidentally knocking Kaiser's careful hold aside as he thrummed with nervous energy. Kaiser frowned up at the pale buck, wondering at the uncharacteristic restlessness that seemed to have overtaken the younger buck. "Elodi, what-"

"I need to go. I... I think I need to be somewhere. I'm sorry, Kai, I'll try and see you soon," Elodi stammered out, shifting his weight indecisively as he seemed to stare through Kai at something only he could see before, with a brief touch of his nose to his friend's cheek, he went bounding off into the darkness of the forest.

"Elodi? Elodi!" Kaiser shot to his feet and turned to follow the fleeing buck with pinned ears. However the forest was dark and silent, and beyond the dissipating whiff of the flowers Elodi wore in his hair, there was no sign of the pale buck.

Oh shoosh! Your art has always been fabulous, you make some the most delicate lines and inkwork I've seen. Hell, it was one of YOUR pieces that brought the existence of fawnlings and ARPG to me, and was one of the major factors that led to me diving in to trying all this. Its good to be critical of your work, but don't ever say any of it doesn't or didn't come out well, you have a great command of line structure and color, your fab, ACCEPT THE FACT THAT YOURE AWESOME!
