I like to think Clover was a tricksy little street urchin that Starswirl found during his travels. He was pretty smart for a pony his age, and schooling probably wasn't very prevalent back then, so Mr. The Bearded scooped him up as his apprentice. It was free real estate. At the time, Starswirl served as the court wizard of the then-king of the unicorns, so Clover's closest companion during his childhood was Princess Platinum. I see them more as siblings that constantly argue.

While Starswirl saw the potential Clover had for wizardry, he didn't really give the other street urchins much of a second thought. Clover would often return and offer his help to the poorer unicorns, and while his charity was generally accepted, some particularly embittered ponies turned him away. To them, it was just Clover the Lucky coming back to flaunt his wealth.

"Clover the Clever" was a name he was given on the streets. It was only when he became renown as a wizard did "the Clever" become his wizardly title.

He's Princess Platinum's biggest detractor, but also the one she confides in the most. It's not rare to see them slinging scathing remarks at each other as if it were common practice. The princess definitely learned some very un-princessly insults from Clover.

Try as he might, Clover the Clever could never grow a beard as magnificent as his mentor's.

Clover's special talent is probability manipulation. He can accurately predict the outcome of certain actions and often does just the right thing to make sure the odds are in his favor. Of course, since he's a unicorn he also straight up has "luck magic," but he doesn't use it all that often. His whole thing is using the minimum amount of magic needed for any given situation. He is Clover the Clever, after all, not Clover the Fortuitous.

If caffeine was present during the founding days of Equestria, you bet Clover would be an addict. Ancient wizardry is not a profession that allowed for things like sleeping or rest. Everyone knows that all proper spellcasting occurs in the dead of night!

Clover knows he defeated the earth pony sorceress who created the Memory Stone, but for the life of him he can't remember who she was or how he beat her. All he's sure about is he's the only one who returned to Equestria when they crossed worlds.

Probably says "blimey" a lot.
