The Umbrum are so unapologetically spooky in the comics, I'd be really upset if I didn't try to make something similarly haunting. No fae implications here, just spooky smoke monster horse corpsies.

Rabia's Unicornian expedition met its end in what is now known as the Hollow Shades. There, the light of her horn was snuffed out like a candle, even her intense anger unable to protect her ponies against the cold. Darkness takes the Unicornians, and the Umbrum arise.
All umbrum, save for Sombra and Ira, are the raised spirits of dead Unicornian nobles, brought back from death by the lingering will of the Pony of Shadows. Rabia is the only winged umbrum, effectively acting as their "princess."

Having just cut ties with one foolish ruler in King Bullion, Rabia wasn't keen on binding herself to another. Recognizing that the Pony of Shadows needed her ponies, she bartered for her place as ruler of the enshrouded world the Pony of Shadows hoped to create.

Powerful enough magic could, theoretically, punch a hole into Limbo, allowing the Pony of Shadows to escape his prison and unite with his umbrum. The most powerful magic nearby would have been the recently-created Crystal Empire housing the Crystal Heart. Ironically, the empire was formed from the earth ponies who chose to stay behind.

The coats of umbrum vessels only come in shades of grey, but they can't completely escape their original natures as pastel ponies. The tips of their horns and true forms are often the colors of their coats in their previous lives.

"Death" to umbrum usually just means they have to wait for the vessel to reform. They can be temporarily incapacitated by dispersing their smoke-like darkness, but the real, sure-fire way to get rid of an umbrum would be a powerful source of magical light like the Crystal Heart or Fire of Friendship.

Last tweak on this I promise. Something felt like it was missing, compared to the last big Rabia vector, and then I realized "wait she could totally still have a spooky shadow cape what am I doing," so now she's rocking double cape fashion!!
