A bit of local history (for me) I painted back in '96. A soldier of the British 38th Regiment of Foot in winter quarters along the old Blackstump Road (modern 73rd Ave) in Queens County, Long Island, New York in 1779. This is just a few blocks from where I live. During the British occupation of New York from 1776-1783 Queens was the site of a huge encampment for the British, German, and Loyalist troops of the New York City garrison. Today the area is for the most part covered in housing, and sadly no real archaeology was ever done before the post WW2 building boom.
In the early 20th century the remains of a soldier hut were found near Hillside Avenue, just south of here. It was interpreted at the time as being an American "rifle pit" dug after the Battle of Long Island, which makes no historical sense at all. The site has since been built over and lost.
