Description ok.... wow, so much to say.

went to lake michigan last weekend with the full intention of acting like an arctic explorer for the entire weekend. and so i did!

the ridiculous steps taken to make these 2 photographs:

1) drag the big 'ol 1967 polaroid 210 camera out onto the ice.
2) remove gloves (you just can't use this thing with gloves on) in 5 degree (F) weather.
3) fold out the bellows, ready the shutter, adjust the exposure dial, focus, compose, shoot.
4) pull out film quickly with frozen fingers, quickly put it inside a somewhat warm back pack, start the stop watch, wait for 2 minutes.
5) open bag and peel apart the film. put it in a dry spot in the bag and leave for another few minutes.
6) start the process over again very quickly before the film starts freezing for the next shot.
7) run back to the lake house at 45 mph and ask yourself, "why the heck did i just do that?!"

- i ended up with frozen hands and 8 wasted polaroids... but it was all soooooo much better than shooting with digital. sooooo much better! the process is beggining to outweigh the results for me, and polaroids seem to be the answer to this.i really felt like an artic explorer that day

Wow.. Great work bud. Your a really determined and focused photographer. Or a complete maniac. Both are good

maniac. for sure. my obsession with going to crazy places with highly impractical cameras is growing...

I really love the second one. And the story really brings it all together. Even shooting with digital it's hard to shoot in extreamly cold weather. I had this one time that I was up ontop this HUGE hill and the win was bascily blowing me off. It was cold enough that I think some condensation got inbetween the battery and the connectors in the camera and froze. So my camera just stopped working all together.

YEEEEEAH!

haha, arrrr that's annoying. some cameras just aren't cut out for the job. tell ya what though, i just got a kiev88 with a polaroid back, seriously, if that thing freezes up in the weather i know i'm trouble. the things a tank!

all that -- no matter what got wasted -- the results are quite interesting --

the ones that got wasted -- did it produce some sort of picture -- even though not as clear -- later days

Well the process was worth it.

Makes me think of the photos explorers used to take. It's cool the way you have the two different photos, but not placed at the same level.

Aahh the more i look, the more i love

Good work.

I feel your pain. I try to go out when it's snowing to take pictures and end up with nearly frozen hands. I have these gloves with cut-off fingers so they keep you sort of warm, but still are good for operating a camera.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

osquibb In reply to darin3200 [2007-02-14 04:41:21 +0000 UTC]

yeaa i have some of those too, but this peel-apart film is just impossible to work with in gloves. oh well, no pain no gain (guess that applies to photography now too )

Sounds more like you were suffering to me! Don't worry, I know how it feels, my newest photographs were the same. -15 celcius outside, no gloves or anything.
