Ethan asked Lat down to a walk for a quick break as they hit the beach's edge. He pulled his water bottle from it's pouch and took a deep drink before replacing it and taking up the reins again. He squeezed his calves and moved his hands a bit forward, letting Lat pick up a brisk canter and carrying them down the firm sand on the beach. He could see the flags up ahead indicating where to turn back into the forest to cross the river back. It was a nice day and the cool ocean breeze was welcome to both of them. It had been a long ride and they still had a long ride back.
Ethan let Lat's path wander to the ocean and let her kick up some of the cool water onto her legs before taking a turn back into the trees. She dropped to a trot to climb the small rocky incline then happily took off again as the forest trail opened. Ethan was deeply impressed with her stamina. She was a smart mare but definitely needed all four feet on the ground and didn't have the patience for Dressage. But Robin wanted to give Lat and her sister every chance possible before sadly re-homing them. Luckily, they turned out to be great endurance mounts.
Her ears flicked forward as the river came into view and Ethan made a feeble attempt at telling her to calm herself and she maybe hesitated slightly before fully jumping into the river.
"Jesus, you're gonna kill us," he laughed as she splashed her way through, a happy little bob to every step. Lat was about as sure-footed as you could get, as long as she wasn't jumping over anything it seemed impossible for the mare to lose her footing, so he wasn't that concerned. He did, however, much prefer a calm and smooth descent into bodies of water.
As they exited the river and the forest trail opened up again she took off, steam rising from her body as Ethan soaked up the cool greenery around him, and listening to the melodic, steady rhythm of her hoof beats on the ground as they headed for home.
