I think it's because some people complained about the inconsistency of the kids' araciality and Trickster Jane's "I feel caucasian" joke (which was changed later btw).
I mean, yeah, I guess Hussie can't say "their races are up to the reader's interpretation" and then state canonically that some of these kids are white/caucasian, but... come oooooooon people, it's Homestuck - which is practically a really toned down South Park. You're not supposed to take something so gogdamn random so seriously, especially since I highly doubt that Hussie intended to sound racist.
People complain when the kids are depicted as black, people complain when the kids are white-

I mean, I don't want to say that people are way too sensitive towards racism (especially if you look at half the racist things that are going on in the world), but sometimes they just interpret innocent things in the wrong direction, you know?

(But the most annoying thing is when people get upset over others' "blackcanons", ugh. So what if they want to imagine them with black skin, they're still the same fucking characters we know and love. Like, there was this an incident with that one Homestuck tarot card set where some people posted comments like "Dave/Dirk is a n**ger now?" etc. just because some characters were black.)
