Description Also, here's some useful info on the updated Magic Kit.

In the left side of the photo, you can see a comparison between the horn alignment of the earlier kit vs. the horn alignment on the new kit. The first version was really off center!

In the Right side of the photo you can see the lines etched into her mane and tail. I wish I had a painted kit to better show off these lines... soon hopefully.

PS And yeah, Fire Fly and Surprise deny knowing anything about why a pink Unicorn would be running about with Twilight's hair style...

Thanks!

Expensive, yup.  The silicone rubber I use to make the molds costs a small fortune, and the resin is only cost effective if I'm buying it by the gallon.  But I can make that back selling my work on-line or at conventions.  What is more costly is the time I have to invest into doing the project- something as simple as prepping the molds and mixing/pouring resin takes a lot more time than one might think.

Yup, it can be done in a house- I don't know if one could describe my house as "normal" though- typically, when I'm working with the resin, the house looks like a disaster area.  Not normal.

Yeah, I figured it'd be costly. But I do have a couple of things I'd like to test in resin, so I've been thinking of trying it. But there's no point if I get broke by it and end up with useless stuff, so gotta fund up before that. I make customs too, but by just using super sculpey and baking it then. With the ponies. Heh.

Hm, I can imagine the disaster zone, it's probably like my house when I get into creating things... But, I heard that you need to have a very good ventilation to deal with resins. There are several different types of resin then?

OtakuSquirrel In reply to Ihmislehma [2013-10-25 05:48:23 +0000 UTC]

The resin I use is a two part mix- with a 1 to 1 ratio.  Very simple, and it doesn't give off any fumes, so I really don't have to worry about the ventilation.  It does heat up when curing, so I do have to be careful not to get it on me...  ouch.  But yeah, lots of different choices in resins with different cure rates and different mix ratios... and yeah, some need lots of ventilation... so always check the labels.

The first time I went and bought mold making/resin materials, I dropped about $500 at the store... freaked me out.  Unless you know for certain that you'll have a market for what you make, you have to be prepared to just write off that first investment- and I was fortunate that I started this at the right time.  Once you know your market and if you have something you can sell, it becomes easier- and once you've gotten some of that investment back, it becomes a lot easier to drop the money for your next project.

Ihmislehma In reply to OtakuSquirrel [2013-10-25 11:35:58 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, so when I do try it first time I have to make sure it's something safe for home without super ventilation. I didn't know they heat up when curing... Do you know what causes that? Sounds a bit scary, heh.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm "only" doing customs with less expensive materials, but it's still an investment. And since I still don't have a large enough market to sell them, it's been somewhat hard to get my investments back. Problem is, that there's not that many bronies in Finland that either know my work, want it or can afford it. And when it comes to international shipping fees... Rather expensive from Finland, so much so that the fees could even exceed the price of the pony. Which means not many are feeling like it's worth it. Also, I'm still not very known with my work. I don't really know how to promote my work, though I have already gotten a lot more watches and faves than I used to.

OtakuSquirrel In reply to Ihmislehma [2013-10-26 05:34:21 +0000 UTC]

Most resins give off some heat when curing- the stuff I use just happens to be a "quik-cast", and because it cures in about an hour, it gives off a lot of heat all at once.  The slower resins give off their heat over a much longer time period, so they never get as hot.  I once screwed up mixing up some of the resin and poured it into a glass bottle so it wouldn't screw up my mixing container- but the bottle still had some water in it, so it erupted like a volcano when the heat boiled the water!  It was pretty crazy.  The resin dried mid eruption and the results looked pretty neat!

When I was promoting my work, I started by joining some of the MLP art groups here on dA- after that, a few of my first customers posted pictures over on Tumblr and some other places.  I also tossed some pictures over to Equestria Daily; Calpain does the customs compilations, and he was always happy to post my stuff up there.  The big thing is to just get some exposure- once people see what you do, they'll post and re-post your work in all the right places.  Just be active and get them excited- the rest will follow.

Sculpey for the sculpting- but all my kits and finished ponies are fitted with polyurethane resin copies of my work.

I'm not offering anything right now. The originals are pretty thrashed and I just haven't had the time to work on them.

Do you have any tips on how to get her mane to fit onto her head? Right now I can hardly see the tip of her horn when I put the sculpted mane on.

Thanks so much! <3

OtakuSquirrel In reply to Roscofox [2012-04-16 19:29:18 +0000 UTC]

?? You're supposed to chop her horn off and stick it into the hole on top of her mane...

Yeah, after I read through everyone else's questions I found the answer. I feel dumb for not reading.

No worries! I sometimes derp on giving good insructions! Several Fluttershy manes have fallen victim to my not having told people how to slide them into place correctly.

Great job sculpting the manes and tails!
Which pink unicorn did you use? And,how do you paint the eyes and the plastic? (if that's not supposed to be secret.. )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OtakuSquirrel In reply to FalseProphetX [2012-04-08 01:19:36 +0000 UTC]

The pink unicorn is Twinkleshine. All the eyes in that photo are the original Hasbro paint aps... I try to not repaint eyes unless I absolutely have to. When I do, I just use acrylic paints and a super small paint brush.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FalseProphetX In reply to OtakuSquirrel [2012-04-09 17:26:53 +0000 UTC]

thanks a lot ^^
I've never seen a Twinkleshine being sold before, that's why i thought you painted them :3
And,which kind of "plastic" do you use to make the hair?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OtakuSquirrel In reply to FalseProphetX [2012-04-09 17:31:06 +0000 UTC]

It's a two-part polyurethane casting resin. It's pretty much the easiest stuff out there that I could find to use.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FalseProphetX In reply to OtakuSquirrel [2012-04-10 14:32:01 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot!
About the polyurethane casting resin, can you mold it or it's liquid?(I've never seen that for sale, that's why I ask) Do you make a mold for hair before, using some other materials?
And..which paint is best for making cutie marks?
Really sorry for asking so much
I'd like so much to customize ponies, but I really don't know how to start
My dad is going to the US for work this week,so,I can ask him to bring me some victims ponies to customize(idk why,but the ponies are way more expensive here)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OtakuSquirrel In reply to FalseProphetX [2012-04-10 15:26:19 +0000 UTC]

The resin starts as a liquid. I have to go to a store that specializes in plastics to get it.
I make my sculpts with sculpey, then create silicone molds so I can cast resin copies of my sculpts.

The best place to start is with some sculpey or similar hobby-oriented over-bake clay.

I'll try to find sculpey or clay somewhere near here c:

We have to cut off her horn....? Lol, this was going to be the first kit I was going to do since Twilight is one of the few I can get a hold of in the stores, but now I am not so sure. I suppose if I totally mangle her I can turn her into Frankenpony bait.

BlackWidower [2012-01-19 22:48:02 +0000 UTC]

How did the original have it's horn slightly to the left? Did you modify the pony for no reason?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OtakuSquirrel In reply to BlackWidower [2012-01-20 03:28:27 +0000 UTC]

Basically, when I was doing the original sculpt, I added the spot for her horn before I finished the everything else... and as I worked on it, the hair was rotated just a bit and the horn ended up in the wrong spot. She was only my third sculpt, so it was a learning experience.

Quick Q.

Twilight's Horn, haven't checked yet but do we need to cut it off and reglue the original horn inside the hair mould or can we just drill thru the mould and have it poke thru without having to cut it off? (assuming we fill in the original off-center placement first?)

(Might actually get around to starting on the kits I bought off you last year soon G/F is champing at the bit for her custom Fluttershy)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OtakuSquirrel In reply to RallyFurre [2012-01-18 08:09:50 +0000 UTC]

Yes, Twilight's horn gets chopped off and then reattached to the mane. I wouldn't recommend drilling through the hair for it to poke through, but I haven't tried either... I think it probably would look way too short if you tried.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

RallyFurre In reply to OtakuSquirrel [2012-01-19 07:43:31 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, might even fill in the hole completely and re-drill an indent for it on-center. Didn't realize the original mould was off center until I saw this redo of it. Eh, not gonna be doing Twilight for a while anyways.

OtakuSquirrel In reply to RallyFurre [2012-01-19 07:53:31 +0000 UTC]

It's not something I even noticed until I set up my first Twilight. And even then, it's only really noticeable if you look at her head-on. But, I had an opportunity to fix it, so I did.

shearx In reply to OtakuSquirrel [2012-01-18 08:30:21 +0000 UTC]

i formed the hair around the horn with my sculpt. IMO it doesn't look too small, but to each their own i suppose.

OtakuSquirrel In reply to shearx [2012-01-18 08:42:45 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but on your sculpt, Twilight's bangs contour to the shape of her head. The bangs I sculpted have a lot more volume, so her horn wouldn't extend past them nearly as well. What works with one sculpt doesn't necessarily work with another...
