Description Slava had just returned from Germany at the outbreak of the war. His parents had divorced shortly after his older brother died and his father was living in Germany. His parents would often try to turn him against the other but neither seemed to really care about his feelings. Though he was part Russian Yaroslav's father disliked Russia and fought on the German side while his son fought on the Russian side. His mother had remarried and the outbreak of the war drove his step dad to constantly call him "German boy" so Yaroslav finally left home to live in Petrograd.

He was friends with Prince Oleg K. and had a crush on Tatiana K. He liked poetry and wrote one about Oleg after his death.

Account:... In the evening I joined my father for dinner. As usual the conversation turned to the Kaiser who it seemed my father no less than worshiped. When I didn't voice my opinion, negative or positive, my father became indignant with me and began to shout at me. He swore at me saying I was a weak coward. Even in Russia he demanded I dress in civilian clothes in his presence. Once when I was a boy he struck me for wearing my Corpse de Pages uniform. My father was calm this evening but I had gone to extra lengths to appear as the perfect son of a German in his eyes. After we had finished the meal my father smoked while I read the Homage of the Arts. Suddenly my father, who always keeps his pistol handy, aimed his gun at me and fired into the wall behind my head. I fell out of my chair and ran from the room as quickly as I could. Upon my return to Russia I learned that war had been declared. My father entered the war with the Germans and I knew that if we were permitted to meet on the battlefield he would indeed shoot me.
