Yes, but a Jew.

Really? Charlie Chaplin was Jewish?!

There is no proof that Chaplin was Jewish, or came from a Jewish background. He was accused of being a "Russian Jewish Communist" by the American government in the 50's, but they had nothing to back up their accusations. He had no political convictions, and he wasn't religious.

Ok..

But are you sure he had no political convictions?
We talked about it once in class, and our teacher mentioned that he was a Communist. Or at least, that he was inclined towards the communistic idea... Something like that.

beckaloo In reply to PeanutbutterJelle [2012-03-05 21:01:33 +0000 UTC]

He stated once that there was some good in Communism, and that they should segregate the bad in it, and any other form of government. But he also stated that if anything he was more of an Anarchist, because he didn't like governments or politics, which isn't surprising considering how he grew up.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

PeanutbutterJelle In reply to beckaloo [2012-03-06 16:04:30 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes now that you mention it, I do remember him saying something about Anarchism.
Yeah that even sounds more plausible.

So all this about him being Jewish or a Communist is more or less propaganda, right? False interpretations

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

beckaloo In reply to PeanutbutterJelle [2012-03-06 19:32:08 +0000 UTC]

Yes, exactly. Because Chaplin was very outspoken and many of his films spoke out against what he deemed was wrong with society, the American government became very uneasy with him and used propaganda to change public opinion on him....And it worked, at least for a couple decades. This was during the 50's, so the government at the time was probably very paranoid about Russians and Communism, and they probably thought that Chaplin was a Communist through false interpretations as you stated. They even had MI5 British Intelligence spy on him to find any truth to it, which they did not, they concluded that he was in fact not a security risk.

Interesting....Very interesting indeed! And it makes a lot of sense.

Well, now I know what to say next time I converse with someone about Charlie Chaplin and his political views.

The way he mercilessly satires Hitler and his lackeys makes for some of the greatest comedy moments ever to appear in movies. Also, it was the first Hollywood movie to have the word "Jew" in it.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

PeanutbutterJelle In reply to MilaEighteen [2011-05-15 13:23:14 +0000 UTC]

I agree! I simply love it

I heard Hitler himself had watched the movie...(not sure how much truth there is in that though)

MilaEighteen In reply to PeanutbutterJelle [2011-05-16 02:17:15 +0000 UTC]

Interesting. You do not seem to be the sort of person I would peg as enjoying such a blatantly pro-Jewish, anti-war, anti-Nazi movie.

However, his later movies contained some of his most biting social satires. My favourite Chaplin movies are "The Great Dictator", "Modern Times", and "Monsieur Verdoux".

PeanutbutterJelle In reply to MilaEighteen [2011-05-17 12:21:23 +0000 UTC]

Oh there's more to me than there is to me ....
?

We watched Modern Times in class. Although, my fav is The Great Dictator!
I haven't really seen a lot of them, but I also like The Gold Rush and The Kid (that one was emotional).

MilaEighteen In reply to PeanutbutterJelle [2011-05-19 04:13:04 +0000 UTC]

Ah, yes, Jackie Coogan. "The Kid" and "City Lights" are two of Chaplin's great tragic-comic-romance mashups.

"Monsieur Verdoux" is one of Chaplin's blackest films, in which he plays a French who has lost everything in the Depression, and turns to marrying rich old widows and killing them for their inheritance. It was made in the fifties, towards the end of his career.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

PeanutbutterJelle In reply to MilaEighteen [2011-05-19 12:45:11 +0000 UTC]

one of his blackest?....
so it's not that funny?

It's funny. Just... morbidly funny.
