Description A recent commission;
the challenge;
To design and fabricate a knocker for the side door jamb of an entry door. The center of the door has a glass fanlight negating the possibility of the knocker going on the door itself.
Also the client designated the use of the recent forged square tubing sample (the bottom one):
[link]
I generally communicate with clients about their commissions using many photographs,to keep them apprised of progress.
This is a good example of SITE SPECIFIC DESIGN AND FABRICATION.

All stainless steel forged and welded.
Overall length is under 12"
Overall rise of the arch on the hammer piece is 3.5"

Addendum:The client found the piece too masculine and imposing for her taste so she took another piece instead of this one.Normally I would not allow this but she's a lifelong friend and has purchased at least a dozen of my works so a bit of latitude is certainly in order here.
My point is this piece is now up for sale...

Thank you Marsha,
It could be either.
I'm bummed it ended up not working aesthetically for my friends house, but I know I'll sell it to somebody else eventually.

Hey Cullen,
This client is one of my best friends. She will surly take shots of the piece once her neighbor installs it.
She also has the Calla Table which I made for her last year. That also needs to be re-shot for my portfolio.
I try to stay in my studio and just make stuff and let somebody else do installs. Occasionally if it's a difficult or complicated piece I'll enlist the aid of my contractor friend who has the requisite portable tools, insurance ,and license. For those jobs the client has a separate contract with my friend and I work for free on the day of install. That way I usually don't have to deal with the legal and logistical responsibilities but am there in case something doesn't fit and needs a bit more work.I act as an assistant for my friend and the client gets my time for free. This arrangement has served me well for twenty years...

very nice, the piece looks great by the way. Haha yeah, I understand where you are coming from on the legal side of working... I work for a general contractor that will have me do "special" (ei: welding, smithing) work off site so that he is able to complete a job quicker or easier, I can sell the "special" work from my workshop as "art" but if I was to weld or smith on site I would have to get my license for such things... keep up the good work

Yours is a safe arrangement as well.
Part of me feels these conditions are unfortunate, but the threat of litigation is simply too much of a risk.

Thank you Joe,
Others have said they recognize my work too.
I think I like that. It says I have an identifiable style, though for me myself it is hard to define.I am too close to my own process to put it into a coherent statement.
May I ask your indulgence to help me in this.
If you were pressed to briefly describe my work, what adjectives would you use?
Thank you ahead of time.

Hey there Steven,

I haven't forgotten about this 'request', I'm just taking more time so that when I do send it, I have done it correctly.. I'll bring up a slide show with your work on it and then 'describe it' in a response as you asked...

Cheers,

/Joe...

Thank you Robert.
If I can by my disclosures help to de-mystify the process of making Art,then I have fulfilled a purpose greater than the making of my art itself...Sharing knowledge in this way helps to grant permission to others to pursue their own lines unobstructed.

I'll have to reiterate the first comment, very elegant, also, if looking at the knocker end as the base, it looks like some sort of plant in very strong wind or a silk scarf in the wind.

ou8nrtist2 In reply to T-Thomas [2010-06-27 20:27:36 +0000 UTC]

Ah,thank you.
That was the intent after the first round.
I had a scroll on the hammer end and it was just overkill.
So the scroll was cut off to give a greater emphasis on that arch.

do you ever photograph your process or is that top secret?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ou8nrtist2 In reply to T-Thomas [2010-06-28 01:03:47 +0000 UTC]

Heavens no, it's not secret.
In fact I share freely just about everything in regards to technique, especially here on DA where there is a good potential to both encourage and inspire young artists.
Others have documented my process in various ways and at different times ,but nothing organized or coherent that could be put on You-Tube for instance.
I am usually a bit too involved in the work at the time to set up remote cameras etc.and all the other peripheral accouterments that good documentation requires.
My process is inward at the moment of creation and not particularly social, though I did sort of get into it (show and tell)when I taught at Berkeley in my capacity as sculpture technician(1987-1993). But that is an ACADEMIC INSTITUTION and for the most part cranks out ART TEACHERS not artists,(one of several reasons why I quit)...My efforts there were largely wasted.
for example my technique for fabricating life size figures in welded metal from body molds is a process I would like to put on video.

I always get self conscious when people can watch me working. I think even with just a camera I would get a bit antsy Prefer to be alone and concentrate when possible. What about just taking photos at different stages?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ou8nrtist2 In reply to T-Thomas [2010-07-01 06:55:14 +0000 UTC]

When I'm making the art I'm concentrating and completely engrossed in the process.
Sort of like being "in the zone".
The last thing I'm thinking about is taking pictures.
At the time it just doesn't seem like a priority.
I think because of this it will in all likelihood be someone else who takes the pictures...

T-Thomas In reply to ou8nrtist2 [2010-07-03 05:19:50 +0000 UTC]

I think you are right on that one! Not that documenting the process is nearly so important as the piece, and creating the piece anyways.
