Thanks for your lovely comment!
These dapples were created with individual droplets of clean water, dropped into the wet grey wash of the horse's coat - it's important that the wash on your paper is still wet. You can also try creating lots of smaller dapples with a spray bottle. But be careful, if you put too much water on the paper it will become a mess.
Good luck!

Those dapples! I love the way you used outlining. It feels like a part of the interior, rather than a flat border. Great shapes in the head and mane.Β

This is beautiful! Fantastic work! the dapples look like the effect you get when you place salt on watercolor, what did you do there?

Thank you very much! No, it was white gouache dropped into dark watercolour wash. I'm afraid salt doesn't usually work for me so well.

hmm, very cool technique. Never played with gouache ever. Only time I ever used salt with watercolour was playing with making a galaxy scene XD

It's worth a play! It comes in most colours, but I only really use white to mix in with my watercolours.

Yea, maybe I'll have to. May I ask, what brand of watercolors do you use? I need to restock and I think I'd like to try a different kind than I've been using.

The brand is "Art Spectrum", it's in the middle of the range between el cheapo and super expensive. I did notice that these paints behave differently from super cheap brands, they seem to bleed onto the paper more naturally and have a nicer texture in general, richer colours, they also react Β to salt whereas cheap watercolours simply don't. I think this is because the pigments are made from different chemicals which naturally behave differently, have different densities and smoothness. You could try buying a single tube of a nicer brand and experimenting with it next to the same colour of your current brand, to see the difference.
