Do you do backgrounds first or second?

I usually do the background first, then paint the character over it.

I really like the texturized look you got on the horses barrel and back! I also like the dark shades of the bg, it's like rust. Wonderful art with a white line again

Thank you! I'm glad you like this. All the tiny spots were made by flicking a wet paintbrush, and the effect seems to be perfect for roans and appys

I see! Have you ever tried a fan brush? I'm purchasing one myself at some point in the near future and wondered what kind of results they would have when making a roan/appy

I've seen them but never knew what they were good for. They'd probably be good for trees and stuff.

Yeah, I saw some very impressive background etc work done with one, almost photographic-like (ie. unsharp bgs).

love the way you paint appy.
really like the texture of the background, though i probably would have gone with a cool color to offset the warm horse.
what paper do you use?

oxpecker In reply to KreepingSpawn [2010-12-14 22:45:02 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Can't stop the spots ^^
Hm thats a good idea, I'll have to try that next time
This paper was called 'egyptian', it's basically light cardboard with some texture in the colour. Probably not the strongest material to work with, but it hasn't let me down yet.

intriguing. looks like it's not as susceptible to the buckling we get with watercolor on conventional papers.

It does buckle quite a bit, but it flattened well after being pressed in the pages of a big book for a few hours.

Thank you so much again, I cannot wait to give this to my sister. I will be sure to let you know how she reacts.
