Description Please check out my new scientific illustration group:

Here's my take on the Ice Age bush-antlered deer. Those antlers are not exaggerated, I could have drawn them bigger. The bush-antlered deer, or Eucladoceros, was the real life inspiration for the Pokémon Xerneas. This illustration was sort of a re-do of an older Irish elk painting of mine . It's interesting to compare them side by side. I hope that I've improved a little!

This species Eucladoceros dicranios had unusually elaborate antlers spanning 1.7m (5.7ft) across. Its body size and weight was similar to an American elk (Cervus canadensis) but it was probably more closely related to red deer and white-lipped deer. It's a very underappreciated animal because its fossils are rare and it wasn't as big as the Irish elk (Megaloceros) which usually hogs the spotlight in documentaries.

I based this painting off the type specimen, a beautifully preserved cranium and antlers uncovered in Tuscany (on display at the natural history museum in Florence). Some smaller remains have also been found in England and South Western Russia, but we do not have a complete skeleton.

This original A4 gouache painting is for sale. Prints and stickers are also available from my Redbubble store .

Their extinction was natural, and they made space for new species, so I don't find it sad. Would have been amazing to see this animal alive though.

My favorite deer!!  I adore their amazing antlers.  I wonder if they got in many head-bashing fights come rutting season, or if it was more of the "my horns are bigger, I win" thing.

I'd like to think they really fought with them. The arrangement of the tines (points) appears to be functional. The brow tines at the front are designed to protect the eyes and face, which wouldn't be needed if they were purely cosmetic.
