I'm afraid I haven't much in the way of constructive criticism to offer, just to say that it's a beautiful painting, and to not would be a crime.

SO very impressionistically dreamy I absolutely love your pallette, mind sharing what you used. /? As far as the water under the boat goes, I would have just used a bit of scaping or a razor edge to show the begining of the water under the boat and maybe just a bit more darkness right under that, no need for ripples if the water was completly calm. Awesome work

Sag mal, bist Du etwa Kunstprofessor??

Yes, very nice. The line that divides the shore and the reflection could be darkened a bit, and maybe a little darker just under the boat and carry it into the reflection. I'm not an expert on water reflections, but looking at the boat down the picture looks good. Looking up from the boat is confusing. Great shadows in the boat, and good foreground. Overall, a very good composition.

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment!
Yes, the general consensus seems to be that the water, which really was as quiet as the proverbial millpond, needs some movement to make it appear more "real". I'll see what I can do - Heaven help me! The only good thing is that I painted this on my last piece of Montval which is a very "forgiving" paper as far as lifting colour or corrections are concerned.

wholba [2005-12-05 05:35:53 +0000 UTC]

nicely done. good choice of colors too.
but all in all it's a little to "flat". as my co-commenters stated before, some signs of water movement are missing....

p-e-a-k In reply to wholba [2005-12-06 10:05:33 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that seems to be the general verdict - water movement. And there I was thinking I'd picked an easy one with the water in that moat so quiet and not a ripple in sight. Blast!
So - movement it is. Keep your fingers crossed!

Yes, this is very nice. The composition is simple. I like the unique perspective, and the story that goes with it. I know nothing about watercolor, but if you want to emphasize the water, I think that one way you could do this is by using some horizontal "lines" to suggest ripples in the water. I did something like this here: [link] but it is in charcoal pencil. Maybe something similar, but adapted for watercolor would help you.

Movement in the water - yep, that's the general consensus..... and the most difficult thing to paint in watercolours! Blast!
I'll see what I can do, keep your fingers crossed!

Oh my dear P-e-a-k, you are just getting better and better. I like your foliage better this time But maybe a few darker lines under the boat showing the water movement a little?

Oh boy! And there I thought I'd picked an easy one exactly BECAUSE there was not a ripple in sight and the water flat and quiet as a millpond! So ripples and movement it is, heaven help me....

Well, you asked for suggestions, didn't you? Maybe your photo reference did not show it, but there is always a little indication no matter how "ruhig: the water could be You can do it, just ...practice on another surface first. Or just leave it alone until you do another water surface so you can get the feel

p-e-a-k In reply to milbisous [2005-12-09 03:17:36 +0000 UTC]

I sure did ask, because even to me the thing didn't look too convincing - and I'm not complaining in any way about your helpful suggestions!
As I'm sure to mess up if I try to change the present painting, I've decided to do another one - with movement in the water.

Like you, whenever I feel something not right, then somebody else sees it too Yeah, just leave Different view alone and do another one. Or why don't you try the same view and do it in acrylics, that way you can experiment water movement and reflection. In case there is mistake, you can...paint over it. That way, you will have two"Different view" to look at and decide which one you like more. But really, your watercolors is splendid, just be happy with it.
