Description Not only the scenery along the coast of Northern Palawan provided me with lots of painting subjects, even the grounds of El Nido's tiny airport proved to be a fountain of inspiration. You could call this an "open-air" airport as it consists mainly of a small check-in pavilion in a very beautiful garden where, amid a riot of flowers, you even find hammocks(!!) slung under the trees - no hardship to wait for your plane here!
There were lots of lovely bougainvillea in bloom all over the place - couldn't resist having a go, flowers being my favorite subject next to landscapes.

Watercolour on Winsor & Newton Lana 300 g hot-pressed

Well I don't live in the tropics, but I am so glad that Bouganvilleas can still grow in my climate conditions. Amazingly, the less attention they get from the gardener, the more flowers they get ( kinda like Frangipanis ).

Bouganvillea flowers are often thought to be the colourful parts such as the red and orange ones here, but the true flowers are the small white things in the middle. Their gloryious colours are actually "bracts", which are really modified leaves...My favourite ones have always been the cerise-pink coloured ones ( lucky for me, they are the most commonly grown colour in my area )

You bet...And tropical plants are my favourite subject for gardens, so I spend more time researching them over other plants.
Though I'm too young ( and broke ) to move into my own house yet, so I don't have a garden of my own, though I've influenced my parents to give their garden a tropical theme. My own plants are grown in pots for now.

Patience! One day you'll have a place of your own.... and then you can turn your garden into your own private tropical jungle!

Thanks!
And it was a bit of both: several reference photos taken at El Nido airport plus some cut bougainvillea from my garden for "true to life" colour etc.. The only problem (like with most other tropical flowers) was: the stuff WILTS faster than you can paint it, so I had to send the gardener up a ladder each morning because the bougainvillea in my garden are old and very high!
LOL!

This is gorgeous!!! I did a workshop the end of March and did a bougainvillea on a hot press illustration board, as an experiment. I've always avoided bougianvillea, because of all the tedious little flowers (although I love them on my lanai!) My attempt turned out ok, but nothing I'd like to share with anyone. Great Job!

Thank you! Coming from you that's a compliment indeed!
Until now I'd never done bougainvillea either - and my garden here is full of them! It took a delayed departure at El Nido airport for me to really "see them up close and personal"!
Maybe you'll have another go now....? Just make them BIG!

Very beautiful with composition and colors. Do you remember what colors you used to make the reds?

Thanks a million for the !

The colours for the reds? No problem - I can tell you exactly as I keep a kind of log-book:
Quinacridone Red, Quinacridone Magenta, Permanent Rose, Alizarin Crimson and French Ultramarine.
All Winsor & Newton, btw.

Wow! Look at all those colors working together. Thank you! I'm keeping notes about my pieces too, I think it's helping. I am also finding that Winsor & Newton have the consistantly best colors too.
