Oh, is it the new one? I've seen it on Youtube but I haven't given it a proper listen yet! Will be in my to do list. What do you think about it?

Yeah, is it. I think it's pretty good, it's the prequel of 01011001 and the music makes you feel that you're really on Planet Alpha!
Also, I have to say that it has so much elements of Star One (Arjen's side project)

That's an interesting question! Yes and no. They definitely share a similar past, like most of the mages that were freed from the Circle by the Wardens, and such experience forged several similarities in their personality.
But they also have differences. For one, the most striking: Justice! We all know that Anders became a very different person upon joining with the spirit. You could say that Ayreon looks a bit like Awakening!Anders, before joining with Justice: more carefree, laid-back, no real goals or issues in life other than enjoying his renewed freedom and shooting lightings at fools, to use Anders's words. In fact, Ayreon wants freedom for the mages, but he doesn't really make "plans" or writes down manifestos. While DA2!Anders actively works to free the mages in Thedas, Ayreon just goes his way, and if he meets anyone threatening mages, he's going to defend the mages and probably kill the bastard that was so unfortunate to cross his path. (he has proved more than once that he doesn't really mind killing people that he doesn't like.)
There's another big difference: their opinion on blood magic. Anders, in DA2, hates blood magic in all its forms (even if in Awakening you can actually make him a blood mage, but we could blame this too on his joining with Justice, I guess). On the other side, Ayreon doesn't really mind blood magic, in fact he would use any means to accomplish what he has set in his mind. He thinks that blood magic is just another of the powers that mages are gifted with, so why not use it, as long as the user is capable and strong enough to not be corrupted by demons.
All in all, Ayreon is more selfish, immature and uncaring than DA2!Anders. He would have never accepted to host a spirit in his body, even if it were to help the mages. I headcanon that the last thing his mother told him, before they brought him to the circle, is to never let them change who he is, and he cherished those words quite literally. He never listened to his teachers (which earned him a lot of punishments xD), he is reckless, selfish, flirtatious, he never really minded to hide his attraction for men, he doesn't care what others think of him. He would never willingly give away so much of himself for a cause, like Anders did by joining with Justice. He would hate the thought of being changed by a spirit. Oh, and although he has helped poor people he met on the way several times, he wouldn't spend his days healing people like Anders does. He is a good person, but doesn't have such a strong calling to altruism.
Who knows? Maybe he'll grow up, someday, and he will take on some sense of responsability, but I don't think it will happen any time soon. So far, he doesn't even have a place to call home, he lives day by day and he doesn't think much about the future. I even chose the the "open relationship" with Roland, because I thought that was what he would do in that moment, that he would be afraid of the commitment. But I'm sorta regretting that decision, now, because I grew fond of their relationship and now I can't imagine him with anyone else. xD
Sorry for the text wall, I hadn't realized I wrote so much...

when i thought, they're a little similar, i meant ONLY anders. not this kreepy Anders/Justice-thingy.
*sigh* poor anders. i loved him before he became an abomination. now ... i feel sorry for him and his ... improvidence.
anders calling to altruism is the result of justice's presence, not his own decision.
he wants to comfort justice, so this spirit won't come to the fore more often. anders is slaved by justice. and he's depressed by his own naivety.
and hey, your text wall is okay.
sometimes you need much space to express yourself ^^

i think, you're right.

i agree. but the climax of their conflict would have been many years more in future, i think.
Anders was that drop that made the bucket overflow. (i'm not sure, if that's the right translation. it's an old german adage ...)
