Description It is one of the Eastern Water snakes that was seen many time at the lake across the street from my house. Why haven't I gotten any pictures of it sooner? Well other times they were either too far out and I didn't feel like swimming after them, or I didn't feel like grabbing one and getting bit! Tho these guys are harmless to people, they are NOTORIOUS for being bad biters whenever you grab them! And tho I have been bitten in the past by snakes, if I can avoid it I will!
But on the day I got this shot, this snake decided to hang out close to shore and let me get pretty close to get a decent photo of it without having to grab it. They are beautiful snakes and unfortunately are frequently killed b/c people misstake them for the venomous copperhead. But even if it was a copperhead I don't understand why people can't just leave it alone. Even I vet I worked for told me he killed on in his yard. Shameful.
But on a lighter note...do you see the other animal in the shot with the snake? It's one of the MANY sunfish in that lake and it's being very brave too! These snakes eat fish!

i actually tried to catch one by using a rubber worm and a fishing rod. because they like to bite, it was easy to reel him in close, but it was impossible to net him, for we was so heavy and strong in the water that it was like trying to uproot a buried tree branch. he ripped off the lure's tail out of spite and we decided we were not going to try and keep him after that.

I haven't try to catch one myself, other then to capture it in a photo. I like to see how close I can actually get to them without them slithering away and I can get within inches and they still just sit there.

a good strategy. it works exceedingly well, especially if you put your feet down so slowly that the snake has trouble feeling the vibrations. the one i really wish to see either as a pet or in the wild would be the indigo snake. they are such a docile magnificent species.

Indigos are nice indeed. I'm lucky that I live in a still fairly rural area that I get to see animals like this on a regular basis. I wouldn't have it any other way.

nor would i. i think the best moment i've had with a snake was when my corn snake decided to sleep in my sweatshirt sleeve while i was watching cartoons. that was fun.

Why were all of the other comments hidden? Do you not like comments, or were people just being really dumb with their comments? It's a gorgeous snake.
