Description This is my Tomato frog, Tangerine. Yes the frog is suppose to be out of focus. I wanted it like that..the focus is suppose to be more on his front foot. I didn't pose him like this either. As I was taking shots of him he just decided to stick his one foot out. Why? Your guess is as good as mine!

What a beautiful Tomato frog! Do you mind me asking where you got this fine fellow and around for how much?

I got him from a breeder at a herptile show in PA. For the life of me I can't remember the name of the breeder but if I see him again I can find out his info and give it to you if you like. He has been at all of the herp shows in PA that I have gone to over the past 2 yrs so I am sure he will be there again this yr. He really has some nice frogs, very healthy and you can tell he is passionate about them. The frogs are the only herptiles he breeds.

I think I paid $20 for him. Or it might have been $30 which isn't bad. Usually Tomatoes can go for a more. I wouldn't spend anymore then $60 for one tho if you are getting one by mail or from a pet store. It would be best if you can get one directly from a breeder..at least you will know where you are getting it from. I don't trust pet stores...

I would like that. It's people like that who make me smile. Being passionate about an animal and not abusing them and breeding them just to get money makes me sick to my stomach.

I don't really trust pet stores either. They're so commercialized and you have no idea what conditions the animals were in before they were in the store. I try to avoid them and all my current pets are from the human society and pound.

Send me a note regarding this. This way I will not forget...I can be pretty bad with that sometimes. Next herp show isn't for another two months but I am gonna go to it even if hell freezes over! I need a new herp fix!

Hehe thank you He's doing great. The weather is beginning to warm up so I'm beginning to not need to turn on the spare heat bulb as often

Glad to hear he is doing good. It's definitely one thing I look forward too as well! Tho some I always have to keep heat on, even if it's 90 degrees out...like the ball pythons. At least I can shut off the frog lights.

Yeah I feel a bit better shutting off his light, too, because I'm so afraid of overusing the outlet all the heat sources are in XD

They are a beautiful and interesting frog species. Kind of like the horned frogs in personality, but if a Tomato frog bites you at least it will not leave a mark!

Thank you. The title I got from one of the 100 Theme challenges here on DA. I wanted to post this shot but I wasn't sure what to name it..then I thought of the titles of that theme...I couldn't have came up with something better.

That is an awesome froggie!! I had a pacman frog, but he was pretty rude lol

PaganFireSnake In reply to Asheka-Paine [2010-04-10 14:11:59 +0000 UTC]

Yeah some pacman's can be a little moody/aggressive. But a lot of the times if you can get them to trust you they will not growl or lunge anymore. I have 4 of them and they all are well mannered. You still have to be careful tho with putting your hands in front of them.

Asheka-Paine In reply to PaganFireSnake [2010-04-10 17:06:35 +0000 UTC]

hehe mine liked to head butt..I'd rub his head between his eyes and butt his head into my hand..although definitely lunged at me a few times....I found it cute most of the time.

My Ornate grabbed me yesterday when I was had him out and was trying to get some shots of him. But at least this time I saw him coming and he barely got me...didn't manage to draw blood which was nice! It was purely out of a food response b/c there was no growing or puffing out. The dangers of working with frogs!

Asheka-Paine In reply to PaganFireSnake [2010-04-23 01:06:20 +0000 UTC]

haha Yea, I could always tell when my pac was hungry cuz he'd usually lunge - or if I'd feed him and go to clean out his "pond" he'd sometimes mistake me I guess lol Never had him get me though! Who knew the dangers of frogs? lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PaganFireSnake In reply to Asheka-Paine [2010-04-23 20:22:18 +0000 UTC]

Oh I've had them latch on really good! The worse is when they continue to clamp down...like a vice! What I found is that if you place them...and your poor bleeding finger...on a flat surface and spray water into their mouths that usually makes them let go. It is amazing how such a little frog can cause such a painful bite.

Asheka-Paine In reply to PaganFireSnake [2010-04-23 23:25:51 +0000 UTC]

wow!! I've been lucky so far then lol
I always wondered if they had teeth or anything...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PaganFireSnake In reply to Asheka-Paine [2010-04-24 00:01:09 +0000 UTC]

They have teeth-like bony protrusions on the top front part of their jaw. This helps them hold onto larger and more difficult prey. Mine are all very docile have only gotten me out of a food response. I actually took one of them out today...a smaller one of course... to try to get a shot of him grabbing my finger. I did everything...gently tapped on his nose, shook my finger in front of his face and he did nothing! Of course the one time I want one of them to bite me it won't! I am gonna try again in a few days...maybe dangle a cricket in front of him with my bare fingers...that should get him to grab me! Yeah crazy I know but anything for a shot!

Wow, very interesting!! What would you recommend for someone who has limited space and is "newer" at caring for frogs? I liked my pacman, but he got so huuuge (I had to give him up when we moved, luckily I had a friend who thought he was just the coolest thing ever lmao) and I always thought tree frogs were pretty fun to watch, but at the same time I want something I could eventually handle at any given time. I still have a lot of tanks and stuff out at my mom's, but don't have a ton of room where we're staying now for any of the big ones....

haha That's hilarious!! I find that's with any animal though. Couple weeks ago my kitten was in the cutest sleeping position and I grabbed up the camera, as soon as I had it focused on her, she moved and just started at me....They know lol

PaganFireSnake In reply to Asheka-Paine [2010-04-24 22:59:49 +0000 UTC]

If you want a frog that is personable, cute and generally easy to handle I would most definitely got with a White's tree frog. Tho you really can't handle any frog like you can a snake, lizard or turtle (frogs skins is very delicate) you can for short intervals..like to take pictures of them. The White's by far is really the best choice. You can comfortable house one in a 10 gallon tank so they don't take up much space. If you want more info on their care note or email me.

Oh yeah they definitely know! Some seem to like the camera and become real hams in front of it...like my White's Tree frog, Clint, But others, like this horned frog, freeze up. I guess it's not just people that can get camera shy.

They are definitely my favourites at the pet store. I will note you for sure.

lmao Yea, I've definitely had some camera shy animals, it's still adorable though!

PaganFireSnake In reply to Asheka-Paine [2010-04-25 18:58:44 +0000 UTC]

Believe it or not one of the shyest animals I have owned was a red-bellied piranha! You'd think with teeth like they have they wouldn't be afraid of anything. But they are actually really shy and it's kind of sad that some people are ignorant about them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PaganFireSnake In reply to Asheka-Paine [2010-04-25 21:48:08 +0000 UTC]

Live food for captive piranhas is actually bad for them. He mostly ate frozen krill, shrimp, frozen cubed fish foods and boiled chicken parts..like the heart and liver. Live fish can be especially bad b/c a lot of the times they are carrying parasites that they can pass on to the piranha.

I'm ok with spiders...I actually really like them. At least the cute little jumpers. I love their BIG eyes. oOOo I'm not too keen on stinging insects either...but as long as they don't come near me to hurt me I'm ok. Even in the summer around food...they can buzz all they want around it but just don't sting me!

They are a really cool frog. But b/c they are burrowers, like the horned frogs, a lot of people don't keep them b/c they don't move around much. I just love them tho...in all their plump glory.
