She is a nice frog. Gets along well with the green tree frogs she's in with too.

you put toads and frogs in the same cage?

PaganFireSnake In reply to kristenfin95 [2010-04-25 22:15:29 +0000 UTC]

Oh no...just frogs that are of the same size and similar habitat requirements. I know a lot of herp keepers will not do that but if you go to zoos and see their set-ups...many of them mix animals. It's ok to do so as long as they are compatible with each other. I will mix toads with other toads tho, again so long as it is ok to do so.

Cuban tree frogs are one of them! They are a cute frog species but you have to make sure you house them with either exact same size or slightly larger frogs b/c they will eat smaller ones!

im super impressed with your gallery, but i must ask, are these all your pets, or do you work some where with them all?

The majority of them are mine. I make a note in the comments of each shot if they are or not...but if there is one that I don't have stated either way let me know and I will fix that.

I breed the ball pythons and plan on also breeding the corns and hognose snakes...once they are old enough. As for the frogs....maybe...and that's a BIG maybe...start breeding the horned frogs. But there is a lot more involved in them then with snakes. I just really love frogs and they are like potato chips...can't have just one!

haha true, so you breed them , thats cool. I was thinking they were all your personal pets for whatever and i wa like O.O SO MANY ANIMALS TO CARE FOR?!?!!?

PaganFireSnake In reply to ErikoAmamura [2010-04-25 20:36:38 +0000 UTC]

Actually the care really isn't that bad. They don't have to be taking outside to the bathroom, don't eat every day (at least the snakes and frogs don't) and they are very happy in their little enclosures. The hardest ones to keep and maintain are the water turtles, just b/c they are so messy.

Currently trying to put together a portfolio and hopefully get a job illustrating...

I totally understand about being busy! Are there any particular places you are planning on looking into applying to?

Once I get my portfolio together I'm going to try my luck on elance.com. They have a bunch of job listings...
It would also be good if I could get some more commissions and sell some stuff on my etsy.

I've been planning some herptile stuff, but I don't have any currently.
Would you happen to have any suggestions?

I don't have anything particular in mind yet but you can always use any of the shots of my herps as inspiration. If you do just LMK so I can post a link to your art once you are done with it.

She's so pretty! I love frogs, they're absolutely wonderful. Someday when I get into a bigger apartment and have the room, I want to get into keeping different kinds of tree frogs.

PaganFireSnake In reply to cosmicspider [2010-03-12 15:32:22 +0000 UTC]

Tree frogs can be really easy to care for...some can live very long too. This species I think can live to around 10 yrs but others, like the Whites, can live a lot longer...at least 20 yrs. What I really like is they can become very tame if you hand feed them. Some of mine will actually come up and sit on the rim of the tank when I am feeding them and wait to have a hand out.

My toad lets me hand feed him! Blew my mind the first time he did it. Too bad the crickets give me the heebee jeebies and I hate touching them XD

PaganFireSnake In reply to cosmicspider [2010-03-12 16:06:07 +0000 UTC]

I love it when toads see something they want to eat. They get so excited their little toes start to twitch. Most frogs and toads, even those that are wild caught, seem to eventually trust their owners enough to tolerate hand feeding. I think they actually relish in it! Crickets don't bother me...but meal worms or any of those other maggot-like feeders...ewwww. I can't handle those things with my bare hands...I always use tweezers or tongs.

cosmicspider In reply to PaganFireSnake [2010-03-12 16:09:32 +0000 UTC]

It's funny because for a while I had my gecko's container next to the toad's, but I had to separate them because Mr. Toady would just sit in the corner and stare at the gecko all day

I don't know what it is about crickets but they totally gross me out. Which is funny since I feed most of them to giant, fuzzy spiders XD

PaganFireSnake In reply to cosmicspider [2010-03-12 16:49:20 +0000 UTC]

That is hilarious about the toad! It's like he was hoping that if he stared at the gecko long enough it would magically end up in his tank so he could eat it! One of my White's tree frog, Clint, is like that. He will go after anything..even the water when I am spraying his tank. They act like they haven't had a meal in months!

I love spiders, especially jumpers. My mom isn't too keen on crickets either b/c she said they reminder her of roaches. I can definitely see that. But I just see brown grass hoppers when I look at them. But anything maggot-like....I just can't get an image of them spilling out of a garbage can....very BAD experience I had when I was younger.

cosmicspider In reply to PaganFireSnake [2010-03-12 16:57:16 +0000 UTC]

Honestly, I think that's what he was expecting XD He gets all excited the minute he sees movement of anything even remotely food-like, it's hilarious.

I have 8 tarantulas at home at the moment, but most are pretty small and still babies. I'm hoping to pick up at least one or two more at the expo, depending on what's there. It's fun because I've gotten a lot of my friends to get interested in them and less scared.

I don't blame you with the maggot-like thing. Superworms totally weird me out. Too bitey and wriggly and D:

"rofl: I had to put a piece of paper between on of my horned frog tanks and my fish tank b/c one of them keep trying to go through the glass at the fish! I kept hearing a "thud, thud" and it was the frog lunging at the glass (got his tongue stuck a few times too). Crazy guy!

It definitely is nice to see new people I meet start to find a good interests in herptiles when they originally where afraid of them. I have found that a lot of the fear is mostly misunderstanding. My husband is actually a big example of someone that was extremely afraid of snakes until he got to know mine. He still will not handle them much (unless I am there) but he talks to them and will help me out as much as he can with them. It is b/c of him that my collection has grown the way it has too. I have a lot of my snakes b/c he knows how I care about them and he supposes me in keeping and breeding them.

Oh and Superworms are NASTY! My husband will handle them without any problems but I will not dare touch them with my bare hands...yuck!

Glad you like the shot. She does kind of look "other-worldly"...I think it's that long nose of her's and the big eyes. Frogs can be easy to work with if you now how to get them to trust you...through their stomach! All of my frogs are hand fed so the fear they normally would have is suppressed.

Citeron In reply to PaganFireSnake [2010-03-12 18:39:31 +0000 UTC]

Wow, that's amazing how you hand feed them. I didn't think it could be done with frogs.

PaganFireSnake In reply to Citeron [2010-03-13 02:15:01 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah. A lot of herptiles, including frogs and toads, can be trained to eat from your fingers or tongs. It's actually a good thing b/c you can control exactly how much each frog gets, if housed with others, and it helps you to get to know what is normal and what isn't with each of them. If a frog that normal comes hopping over for food suddenly stops doing that then you know something is not right.
