Description
Early Birches first show up during the later Cretaceous. Birches are largely opportunistic colonizers, taking advantage of newly opened up space in a forest. Compared to trees like Ginkgos and Sequoias their motto is 'live fast, die young'.
This early birch took advantage of the death of an ancient tree, setting up home on the root ball torn up when the older tree fell. Over the decades the dirt has slowly eroded away exposing the roots.

Oh, and a small Xixiasaurus henanensis has scrambled up to get a better look around. Because there had to be a dinosaur somewhere.
