Description

Please don't judge too harshly, but I am actually trying to do some story stuff. This has been in the works and something I have been lowkey working on for a while, but didn't have the motivation or confidence to do it. My writing isn't the best, nor is my art, but I am finding a lot of joy and that I am enjoying this. I am always open to suggestions and advice, but please be kind. Thanks guys!

- Maisie -

The flight over the Atlantic to America was fine. Quiet. Lonely. Maisie had never flown by herself before. The little private jet usually felt closed in when she flew with her parents, but today was different. The air in the cabin was usually filled with the sound of her mother’s laugher and the smell of her expensive purfume. Today, it was quiet and didn’t smell like anything. Her father took her to the airport as soon as her mother’s casket was lowered into the ground, kissed her on the forehead, and off she went. She felt as though she lost them both.

With a sigh, she pulled her phone from her bag. She had looked up Cloverfield on social media to see where her father was sending her to. The property was amazing. The vineyards, the arenas, the high end barns, it was something straight out of a magazine. That wasn’t surprising, though. Lyanna wanted the best and nothing less.

Lyanna had a daughter around Maisie’s age, Brielle. The girl had seemed nice, though they had only met once or twice at banquets their families attended for business. Brielle rode, too, though she was a much more timid rider.

Her heart ached and hot tears pricked at her eyes when she scrolled past a big bay stallion who had striking resemblance to hers who had recently been sold. Then, a wave of grief from the whole situation swallowed her whole. She remembered when her mother unloaded the stud, who’s glossy, mahogany coat gleamed in the sun.

“Do you like him? He has a fiery way about him, just like you, Maise….” Even the memory held the sound of the huge smile her mother wore.

---

“Lyanna isn’t home yet, miss, and Brielle looks to be at the barn. I’ll take you to the house to settle.” The driver of the black SUV asked the English girl who sat in the backseat, his own accent coming thck. They passed millions of neat little rows of grapes and the large barn and indoor were coming into view in the windshield. She could see a few cars and a golf cart parked outside.

Maisie thought for a second. The idea of being alone in the quiet almost scared her and her chest tightened.

“Can you take me to the barn, actually?” She finally said, her brown eyes meeting the drivers in the rear view.

The car turned toward the barn. It seemed to get bigger and bigger the closer they got.

“I’ll take your things up to the house.” The man huffed as he stopped and unlocked the car. The girl nodded and slipped out.

---

The barn was immaculate. She had never seen anything like this before. Not on this scale. The detail in the stalls, doors, and ceiling to the patterned flooring, it was overly impressive. Despite, the smell of horses, grain, leather, and hay was comforting and familiar.

A few horses were in their stalls in this portion of the barn, while the other stalls were clean and prepped for their horse to come back. Those in their stall could be heard shuffling about in the shavings and munching on their hay.

As she walked quietly down the aisle, one horse noticed her and put her head over the door, hoping for treats. The large, black tobiano had mismatched eyes and such unique markings. “Alicante”, read the sign on her door. Maisie couldn’t help but stop and give her some love. When she offered her hand to the mare, her speckled nose investigated every inch of it, looking for anything edible. The whiskers tickled her hand, making her chuckle. “Sorry, love. I don’t have anything for you.” Maisie said while giving her a light pat on the neck.

She heard the classic sound of a rail being hit echo from the indoor arena. “Clunk”. Brielle had been found.
