Description The Pioneering Age. A time when mankind wandered the stars desperately seeking a new world to call home. It was during this period that many terrifying advancements were made in all fields of science. Many new technologies were being rushed into production in those days, too many without the time necessary for proper research and testing. A failed experiment attempting to harness the power of dimensional tears as a new energy source revealed a new life form to the universe. When it was still small and harmless they called it a living glass spider, however, once its true nature had been revealed they dubbed it the Spectral Dragon Fang.

The creature's very existence shattered paradigms across multiple fields of study. Its exterior shell was composed of an unknown form of crystallized plasma with jewel like ruby eyes; its seemingly fragile glassy frame loosed the most musical of chimes whenever it made the slightest movements. Though it's size was clearly growing at a rapid pace its weight never increased to a measurable amount above 0. The internal body fluids and organs seemed to move with an eerie life all their own. Their functions could never be determined and their composition forever remained a mystery since the tools necessary to pierce its exoskeleton for samples could never be successfully devised. a few theorized that they were composed of some form of ectoplasm, that the creature was of paranormal origins, but many rejected those theories outright. Whatever it was all involved were soon incapable of refuting the creature's supernatural properties.

Despite how impenetrable and rigid its outer crystalline shell appeared to be it was found that the arachnid could squeeze its entire body through any opening large enough to allow its serrated limbs to enter. When the Dragon Fang grew to what scientist prayed was its adult size, it was soon discovered that it could pierce holes into any substance no matter its strength via its needle tipped legs and fangs. At least 13 researchers were killed before an incredibly dangerous containment method was devised. The monster could only be lulled into a somewhat inert state when given an unceasing bath of intense levels of lethal radiation. It began to seem that the more they learned about the aberration the less they would ever know about it true nature.

The most mysterious aspect about the Spectral Dragon Fang had to be without a doubt the gigantic disembodied skull floating within its abdomen. The potential implications of its sudden appearance were terrifying, causing many of the researchers to go insane or flee to other starships out of fear for their very lives. Was it a separate life form? Was it alive? Was it a ghost or something from another dimension? It had appeared without warning after reaching a size of about 15 feet in height and continued to grow as the creature pressed onward toward 25 feet. The arachnid itself seemed capable of viewing pray from any angle, even through its own body, and as such only ever rotated its body to ensure that its fangs would have to travel the shortest route possible towards its target. Movement from the ghastly skull inside suggested that it was free floating but from time to time it would suddenly rotate and lock onto a particular person in the same room for minutes at a time. Anyone it locked onto would be too unnerved to provide any meaningful work for the rest of the day.

The hunting methods of the Dragon Fang were very erratic. It could never be determined how it selected viable prey, whether it actually ate, and whether its continued growth had any real correlation to the people and test subjects it killed was unknown. What was known was that contact with any of the injectors on the leg tips or fangs guaranteed a 100% mortality rate among victims. those not killed instantly from the beast's power were afflicted with terror, dementia, insanity, and eventually an intense desire to commit suicide. The reactions varied wildly one person to the next and seemed to be slowed only by the subjects previous mental fortitude. The hollow tips of these limbs were believed to be injecting some form of venom but the substance or energy was completely undetectable even by their most advanced scientific methods. whatever it was it attacked the mind directly and its effects could not be reversed; a new form of psychic attack.

The Spectral Dragon Fang's silk was an amazing cocktail of chemicals that gave it a tinsel strength greater than diamonds. The value of even a small portion of the substance was priceless. Harvest of the silk proved to be a nigh insurmountable challenge. The creature, while capable of producing limitless amounts of the substance did so only upon the death of any human being, no matter their location on board the starship, even when it had no actual hand in their demise. It was as if it wanted to ensnare the very souls of the ship's crew and would not waste its silk toward ant other end. It was the silk that forced the research team to keep the monstrosity alive despite their better judgment. It could be said that it was greed that lead the research team to their deaths rather than any true lust for knowledge. In the end the products of their life's works benefited none but a small number of vampires that had survived against all odds into the 23rd century.

Darn I must really suck if I couldn't make what is already a very creepy animal scary. :\

spent a whole day just drawing random spider sketches on Photoshop before burning out at 5 in the morning. then when I woke up some hours later this beauty just jumped out the pencil.

My inspiration for the design was the 1 part spider from Krull, 1 part metroid, and 2 parts zombie and ghost.
