The Atlatl, or spear thrower, is mankind's oldest weapons system. The first of its kind that enabled us to kill large prey from a distance with a high chance of success, and that turned Homo Sapiens into the top predator on the planet. Essentially, nothing more than a stick with a hook at one end that's used to fling a light spear or 'dart' as they are known, this simple device allows the user six to ten times the range and up to two hundred times the power of a hand thrown spear and with much greater accuracy. For tens of thousands of years, until the invention of the bow, the Atlatl reigned supreme. Found all over the world, on every continent that Man has settled, the Atlatl is as varied as the people who wielded them. Here at Paleoarts, i try and capture that inventive spirit.
