Description Also did this, at some point, for my portfolio to show a weird elven alleyway, like a bunch of elves hit the industrial revolution or something and their city suddenly sucked.

yeah.

Oh yeah, it was a weird concept in my head. It'd be cool to revisit one day, I think.

I have always been envious of those who can create wonderful environments. I really like the lighting in this piece not to mention the roots growing out of the alleyways are a really nice touch.

Palidoozy In reply to Kerrigore [2012-01-03 17:45:42 +0000 UTC]

I'm actually really terrible at environments, so this was practice. Environment and atmosphere are two of my weakest traits, as in painting in general.

But thanks! Glad you like it. :>

Kerrigore In reply to Palidoozy [2012-01-03 22:20:18 +0000 UTC]

I'm horrible at them. I half-ass backgrounds so honestly seeing one that has a lot of effort put into it makes me smile, considering how well I think it turned out.

Palidoozy In reply to Kerrigore [2012-01-03 22:47:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh gosh, I used to be the same! I like characters a lot more than backgrounds, so I'd always put lots of detail on characters and nothing on the background. But I think the trick is to treat backgrounds almost like a character. Like if you put trees in the background or something--is this a rainforest? Snow? What animals live in there? Have there been any natural disasters to warrant destroyed areas? What sort of damage have people done? etc. etc. hippy talk.

Sorry, I tend to ramble!

Kerrigore In reply to Palidoozy [2012-01-04 01:43:39 +0000 UTC]

Nah I ramble too, no worries. I agree with you. I tend to put so much effort into the character/characters that by the time I get to the background I'm just looking for something to fill space really and have run out of steam to do anything creative with it. >.>

Palidoozy In reply to Kerrigore [2012-01-04 01:52:21 +0000 UTC]

Oh gosh I was the same. I still kind of am, honestly! A lot of my older pictures are seriously JUST a character standing on quite literally a flat color background. For what I was trying to do job-wise, I realized I needed to branch out a little bit. It helped, too--for my job I draw primarily buildings, haha!

I still prefer designing characters over everything else, but backgrounds are that sort of necessary evil.

Kerrigore In reply to Palidoozy [2012-01-04 01:59:08 +0000 UTC]

POWER TO FLAT WHITE OR COLOR BACKGROUNDS! *falls on face*

I also enjoy characters a ton more.

Palidoozy In reply to Kerrigore [2012-01-04 06:26:57 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, same! Even if I like environments somewhat, I'll still always take designing a character over an environment.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Palidoozy In reply to Pearldoor [2011-11-05 14:04:03 +0000 UTC]

They'd be dastardly elves that would tell you to hug trees and mock you for your non-bio-degradable wallet.

Then they'd shank you with a twig or something.

Very nice work! I'm really awful at buildings. D: Lots of details. The building just left of center looks like it's leaning towards the alleyway. I suspect that was an intentional effect?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Palidoozy In reply to Faeleena [2011-10-30 04:12:34 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yeah. It started as a bit of weird perspective, then I rid of that, but still liked the slant.

I'm terrible at buildings too; that was one of the reasons this was done. Thank you!
