Description Aldebaran: A follower of truth, a light in the darkness.

Gouache painting of my Ren Fair Monster, Aldebaran. As tricky as I made his markings, he's every bit as fun to paint as he is to draw! I should do more like these.

Winsor & Newton Gouache on Strathmore black paper (400 series), 7 x 10" (17.8 x 25.4 cm).

-gasps-Β  I LOVE him!Β  Of course, I'm a sucker for space theme or space-like themed designs.Β  I really like the shift from golden into rusty maroon markings.Β  Very nice.Β  I'm also enjoying the design of his head and foreleg paws.

Thank you! I think this is the only opportunity I've had to make a blatant space-themed design for a creature, and I spent a ton of time doing digital color studies as I tried figuring out colors that were muted by themselves, but bright when placed together. Took ages to figure out, but I'm very happy with him!Β

Oddly enough, it was surprisingly easy to translate the original digital color of his design to gouache. But then again, gouache is basically magic.

Ren fairs are so much fun to draw, I need to make time to doodle them again. I love their extra legs, so handy! (gah, pun!)

Puns are wonderful.Β  Never be ashamed of them.Β  They're magic too.Β  I haven't found anything that can make my friends groan in quite the same way.Β

I'm not sure if I've ever done a digital color study before.Β  I've noticed that digital media sometimes just does not like to translate to physical media.Β  So if you can get gouache to mimic it then yes, it must be magical.Β  OR it isn't and its just good at being a conductive medium for the magic of the wielder.Β

wow, i didnt believe this was traditional for a second there, it all looks so smooth the colours look awesome you can definatly see the themes of space in the design.

Thank youuuuu! I'm so happy with how well the colors matched to the digital reference I drew up of him, mixing was a bit of a butt-pain. WORTH IT.

Thank you! Someday I hope to be as comfortable with digital media as I am traditional, it would speed things up! Though, I doubt it would ever replace gouache for me, we're best friends.

Thank you! I spent quite some time rummaging through Hubble photos looking for a palette that would be striking, yet easy on the eyes. The colors are pretty desaturated when they're isolated, too!

I definitely agree! I wonder, if the texture would be somewhere between alpaca and silk? I'm certain if I had a sweater made out of it, I'd probably never take it off. "Is... is this machine washable???" D:

probably a combo somehow...i could see a dk or sock weight yarn being ideal for making a him! lol maybe an amigurumi of him to start out (probably not with extra markings at first tho lol)

I know I don't comment much lol but all the demos of gouache I saw on youtube made me think gouache was just grossly dull but the beautiful way you've used it here makes me really wanna try it out ;u;

pallanoph In reply to IcefireStarfire [2018-02-23 05:49:07 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I think gouache can be very easily overworked since it's opaque and reconstitutes when wet, but I do my best to work with a very light hand so I don't disturb lower layers. It's a lot of fun!
