Description It's been quite a while since I've worked in ballpoint pen. Used to be one of my few mediums of choice before college. Nice to return to when you're passing time for a few hours between destinations.

So these are studies I did in my Moleskine of my beloved pallanoph character, Neng. He can be found here [link] in the top right hand corner, and also here: [link] He has evolved some in terms of design, I think it's mostly in settling how I want pallanophs in general to be proportioned. Their skulls are becoming larger (FINALLY) and their legs are a little better proportioned. In this case, Neng is intended to have the long legs, as, being of the Southeast Asian strain ( [link] ) he needs to wade into water for his meals. (He does some fishing. )

So you notice he has scars... he received them when he was very young... He was 10, (think an 8 year old human child, more or less) when he was messing about away from home and came across an ill tempered, half blind, crippled female pallanoph who somehow managed to interpret him as a threat and gave him these brutal souvenirs. In this same bloody attack, he was also, more or less, sterilized. Hence his overall appearance: A more female type crest that lays mostly flat, thin ear tassels, and slender build. However, despite this trauma, Neng retains a lovable, quiet personality. He smiles rather frequently, despite the pains the scars cause him as a result, but one should take care were they to meet him. Sudden movements and sounds set him off, and he can react aggressively.

I could say a lot more on his character, but this comment is overlong already.

Comment away! Critiques, questions, etc. are always welcome.

Neng and pallanoph species are (C) to me, April Schumacher.

(Forgive me for this horrible excuse for a comment, my brain is a pile of mush right now. )

Oh, wow, and I didn't think I could like anything more than your pencil work.
The ballpoint pen suits your style perfectly in my opinion. It captures all the graceful lines and subtle tone changes as a pencil, while still providing the sharp contrast and dark, solid lines of your inks.
Neng's fur, his expression, the scar, the big fluffy ears... you've really outdone yourself, I think.

Now, if you could find a way to somehow combine this style with color... I really think you'd have something there.

Aw, no I thought it was a nice comment! Sorry to hear about the "mush brain," though...

Really, more than the pencil work? It is one of my favorite things to use from way back!

I should find a way to add color! But HOW?

And thank you!

Hmm... is ballpoint pen waterproof? o_O
If it is, maybe you could experiment with some light washes of watercolor or something similar? (If it's not waterproof, you can always pencil sketch > watercolor > pen!)

pallanoph In reply to LancerMoo [2009-12-16 05:10:32 +0000 UTC]

I think it might be. But I haven't tried, so I could be wrong.

Either way, I think it would be worth the experiment!

Beautiful texture work especially in the scar. There is a interesting personality in the head drawing where Neng is facing front on. Awesome.

This is one of my first experiences with drawing scars, as this character is the only one of mine bearing such prominent disfigurement.

Thanks very much!

Absolutely gorgeous sketch, oh man, really makes me wanna break out the old ballpoint. xD
The fur is really beautiful~
I do have a quick question though, how big did you draw this, like on what size paper? o:

Why thanks!

These were done in a size A3 Moleskine. They're shown here at a little smaller than actual size.

i love ballpoint pen drawings...they have so much character. How do you cover up when you go wrong though? Or do you just never go wrong

pallanoph In reply to lakerose [2009-12-07 05:59:55 +0000 UTC]

They're definitely some of my favorites!

Ah, yes... I draw out the sketch in pencil first, and make extra sure it looks okay before going in with the pen. I work pretty slowly, so I can attempt to avoid mistakes. (But they do still happen, of course. )

lakerose In reply to pallanoph [2009-12-08 08:13:46 +0000 UTC]

ah i see...i think a lot of flawless looking work is caused by having a pencil sketch underneath

pallanoph In reply to lakerose [2009-12-09 04:51:35 +0000 UTC]

Lots of people will say the same! You should see the initial sketches before I fix them, haha they're so terrible!

lakerose In reply to pallanoph [2009-12-10 22:55:32 +0000 UTC]

do you upload any of them to scraps?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to lakerose [2009-12-11 18:18:44 +0000 UTC]

Ohohoho, no, they never get scanned or documented. Perhaps if there were enough of said sketches with significant charm, I'd throw them together in a sketchdump and then post those. But I guess that hasn't happened in a while...

Y-Esk [2009-12-06 20:35:31 +0000 UTC]

This seriously took me by surprise- you've improved....again!

Neng looks gorgeous! I so love these sketches... and him of course

Poor guy I'm guessing it wouldn't have even occurred to him what a cranky pallanoph would do. Neng sound so sweet though, his scars make him even more beautiful

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to Y-Esk [2009-12-07 05:57:10 +0000 UTC]

I think I let something loose in these, perhaps it was sheer boredom while waiting go to an appointment for my haircut. That, and I was happy to be doing ballpoint, as it's been ages since I've last attempted.

Neng seems to have become quite popular, hasn't he? Kind of hard not to like him, even if he can't speak well and has tics and is rather jumpy.

It was one heck of a nasty surprise for him, that's for sure! Augh, that scarred smile just does it for me, waaahhh! I need to draw it at a better angle someday.

The scars help him feel a bit more real, perhaps.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Y-Esk In reply to pallanoph [2009-12-07 19:47:14 +0000 UTC]

And they're thought out scars too with both physical and emotional effect on him. Seems there are too many characters around with meaningless scars everywhere that have no purpose. Neng is a good example of scars done right

...I want hug him

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to Y-Esk [2009-12-08 05:25:35 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it does happen quite a bit with scars, doesn't it? "Oh, I don't know why those are there... I hoped it would make him look more badass!" I tried to picture the blow landed to him when giving him his scars: The attacking pallanoph was missing her right paw, so she is left handed... so that's some explanation.

I think he'd definitely like a hug.
