Description Right. So about two weeks or so ago I uploaded a reference for my Dolun species: I'd promised to show some basic types and colors, so tada! Here they are.

Now, being an open species, you're more than welcome to create your own character. You can get super creative (hold the sparkles and retina burning colors, please?) or you can go all out "canon". Maybe you'll create your own type. Whatever the result, if you post it, I'd very much like to see what you come up with, so send me a link!

So for those of you who may want to know more specifics that I couldn't fit on the sheet:

Eye colors are usually sex-linked: Males have darker eyes that are less intense in hue and are usually anywhere from dark brown, to soft copper, to bronze, to brownish green. Some may even have grey eyes, but that is more unusual. Females, on the other hand, will have brighter and more vivid hues, from deep copper red, intense gold, vibrant green and even blue.

Males normally tend to be darker than females and with less white. That rule can be broken, though. Additionally, a Dolun's muzzle is almost always white: In rare cases, it may be marked with a darker "snip" marking or be another color entirely.

Manes are normally one of the darker points on a Dolun's body. In the case of the largest type, however, individuals may show lighter hair tips that may extend close to the roots.

Tail tips are made to be distinctive, as they are a form of noiseless communication between herdmates. (Think whitetailed deer.) If the Dolun is a darker color, the tail will be dark with a white tip/underside. If the Dolun is paler, the tail tip will be a contrasting darker hue (often retaining pale hair tips).

The tips of the ears are almost always dark. In natural types, females also have a white patch at the base of each horn.

And if nothing else, maybe you'll create a Dolun which was specifically bred for a color/body/horn type.

Oh! And don't forget, you could have an albino if you'd like.

I've said enough. Can you tell that I really like neutral colors?

Questions, critiques, comments, etc? Go right ahead, I'll try my best to get back to you!

aaah these colours are so nice.
i think my favourite is the darkest, the white areas on the face are really appealing for some reason. plus the big floofs are awesome, too. the middle male reminds me of a markhor with those horns :'D
great colours and variations, i love these guys <3

Haha, that one is a bit like a markhor! Which happen to be my favorite.

The ones on the right I think are my favorite, the females of that kind are definitely my favorite of the three. And the middle type has the most interesting horns, which I absolutely love! They are looking amazing and I think I like them more now than I did initially. I'll probably draw some of these, right after I get to those cirthans. . .

Wow, you put a lot of thought into these creatures. I very much like the ones on the far right! Though the middle ones have some very interesting horns, too. If only I could draw ungulates within an inch of decency.

Ungulates are no easy feat... though I've been drawing some variety or another since I was very young. But! You are more than welcome to have a go at drawing one if you feel so inclined.

Psyartista9 [2010-09-19 18:21:43 +0000 UTC]

They're all so adorable ... they remind me of goats (i love goats)!
Are they as intelligent as your Pallanophs or are they more ... "simple"? Are they cuddle-able?

Keep at the awesomeness!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to Psyartista9 [2010-09-23 22:24:44 +0000 UTC]

Goats are awesome... troublesome, that's for sure, as far as being naughty, and I know this even though I've never owned any. I do know that they love a good scratch between the horns, though.

They're not nearly as intelligent as the pallanophs, but they are quite clever... just on a simpler plain than the 'nophs. I suppose if one were to be domesticated, they'd be quite lovable companions.

*fangilring*
I really, really want to make myself a lower-altitude sandy colored one XD female, I like their little horns more X3
I think I'll make a family group, probably.
How large can a family group get to? Ohm, and how many Dollings [Lol! Dolun Babies XD] do the Dolun have usually per batch? and how long do they take to mature?
...Do child Dolun start off with light fur turning dark, or dark fur turning light? How long does it take for a Dolun to come 'or age/mature''?

Sorry for the questions, just wanna make sure I don't go overboard and get things wrong XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to AzureInfinity [2010-09-23 22:29:04 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, lots of good questions here. I'll do my best to answer!

Family groups definitely seem to depend on the region and the local food supply. High altitude Doluns have smaller groups (max. 10?) and stay very close together. Groups tend to get larger and more loosely associated at lower altitudes.

Doluns usually only have one or two offspring at a time, and they mature between 8 and 10 years of age. They're born with snowy white fur, ehee! And then the points start coming in after a few months. By the time they're two years old, you can definitely tell which color they'll be.

I think I answered everything...

Magnificent... I can't wait to start playing around with these! But what colour to choose? D= They're all so beautiful! On a more technical note, I'm sure I've said it before but I absolutely love the way you use traditional media. The way you paint fur is particularly good, even in relatively quick pieces like these. Even your sketches and reference pictures are beautiful =O Great work - and thanks again for giving us these ^ ^

You have the best designs, April. =]
I love neutral colours too.. and Ram things/horns/hoof combinations tend to be my favourite in regards to character design.
I'm loving the first male one.. and the last male and female one.
It's a shame though, how in Nature the females always get the more boring designs XD But I like that you've stuck to the rules.

pallanoph In reply to AshKerins [2010-09-21 10:10:12 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I don't know if I'd say that...

Ah yes, but at least in this case the females have the more vibrant eye colors.

Great how you managed to give each type it's very own appearance! Although they're all the same species, they're looking very different, like real goats. ^^

I personally go with the largest type...
I love their colours, the shape of their horns and their furriness (can you say this so? ^^)!
