Description And here's more of my pallanoph characters running amok with *beastofoblivion 's Lock characters, because I find them incredibly amusing to draw. In this "mini sketchdump" we have Aryian in his human form riding on Sorstan all "I'M ON A 'NOPH!" (which seems out of character, for both of them, but is still awesome); and Ceras in his half Lock/half human form, sparring with Tjardek. I do hope Tjardek knows this is just sparring and not for realsies, because otherwise he's going to learn a painful lesson.

Drawing the human figure is fun. I must never let myself forget that, though it's the faces that always give me trouble. I WILL PREVAIL. Also, I probably failed in terms of size comparison. These two are about 5 feet at the shoulder, and I remember Ceras being pretty tall...

I don't do nearly enough interaction scenes, so this was a good exercise. The first round of Lock/Noph madness can be found here.

That sketch was a pain, but I wanted it to happen so badly... so I'm glad it's appealing.

Very nice, I'd sharpen and increase shadows in a photo editor like picasa so we can see it better though.

Thank you! I did bump the contrast in Photoshop some, but too much and the shadows in the paper overtake the lines, and if I bump the white, the lighter lines disappear. I think I should start sketching on different paper.

where do you get your anatomy from? life drawing or books?

Anything I see, I do my best to memorize. There is always more to learn. (Though I do wish I had more opportunities for life drawing. I should get out more. )

The interesting thing is, though I enjoy drawing them (with the exception of those "bad sketch" days), I'm always worried about how they look. Thank you, Niroot.

I'd like to draw humans more, but I get SO nervous while drawing them. I know people will immediately see where I went wrong with the faces, so I get worried and fail to take the challenge. But I should still practice more. (And I have been, so that's good. )

kalmanen In reply to pallanoph [2011-07-08 14:50:33 +0000 UTC]

C'moooon, take the challenge. You could be so much worse and you ain't! Besides, you'll get desensitized for nitpickers that way. If you don't post more humans, I will have to commission you to draw some >:}

pallanoph In reply to kalmanen [2011-07-09 19:15:00 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I will! I'm not really sensitive, but I do end up cursing my blind little eyes when I see what I've missed. Then I spend a full five minutes facepalming...

I actually even purchased a book on human facial expression to help me out, as I conveniently lack a mirror to practice drawing my face with. (The mirror can't be taken out of my bathroom, and I can't really draw in the bathroom, lol.) And I don't want my characters to look like me! (Only Adelaide really runs that risk, though...)

(I am very strongly tempted to draw human versions of my pallanophs at some point. It would freak people out!)

Anisis [2011-07-05 09:48:08 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I love how you draw characters in motion. It becomes so vivid and realistic. Perhaps you have been practicing for a long time to achieve such an effect. I hope I can achieve the same someday^_^

pallanoph In reply to Anisis [2011-07-06 19:10:07 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I normally do such stiff, boring poses that it's nice to let loose like this every now and again. And it's good practice for me, since I get rusty. Lots of practice, yep. (And I'm sure you're well on
your way!)

*Glee* Omg, you really went to town with these! Hahaha I LOVE them, they're so dynamic and expressive! I love the look on Ary's face, he looks like he's having the time of his life and that's not a face I get to see very often! I love Sorstan's pose too, your forelegs and paws are so sexay. Like, all the time. And, more glee! Ceras between forms! Now I want to do sparring images with those two too. XD

I wondered how big Nophs were! I went surfing through your gallery and for some reason I remembered them as really big. Ary is like...5'10"? Ceras is only a little taller, haha. The Nophs could push them around all day long. XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to beastofoblivion [2011-07-05 07:54:07 +0000 UTC]

Even Aryian should take a break sometimes and just let loose, right? I mean, we know Ceras is having a grand old time.

Ooooooh, I'd love to see you draw those two sparring, because that would be badass. OHEMGEE!

'Nophs are borderline preposterously big. I think they barely get away with being that size, but since they're being placed in an alternate, earthlike universe, (where they are among the few predator species) I'm letting it slide. They run the gamut between being about 3 feet high at the shoulder to over 5 1/2 feet. (Yikes, that's as tall as I am!)

We'll just see how badly the 'nophs get their asses handed to them once the Locks go into full Lock mode!

beastofoblivion In reply to pallanoph [2011-07-06 01:19:36 +0000 UTC]

Haha he needs more happy time, that's for sure. XD Look for the sparring in my next chardump! Although I'll prob link you beforehand, haha.

I rather like their borderline preposterousness, it makes them that much more intriguing!

pallanoph In reply to beastofoblivion [2011-07-07 07:07:35 +0000 UTC]

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeee! (I am saying that too much as of late! )

If I made my pallanophs any less preposterous, they'd probably cease to be any sort of interesting to me. I mean, they don't even come in any real bright colors! I think they have enough fur and hair to make up for that shortcoming.
