The way you handled that bay color looks luminous, and I love the depth of the eyes and how you pulled off the 3-dimensional structure of the ears. I rather agree with you about the Prismacolors though; I don't drop my pencils often but Prisma tips will still crumble and break while I'm trying to use them, which I hate. I'm keeping my current set more for use as watercolor pencils these days while I stick to Derwents and try out others. Been wanting to try out Caran d'Ache, actually.

That rich bay color is probably one of my favorite colors on animals: next to black, buckskin, and roans. Mahogany bay is gorgeous as well, but I don't know if I'm quite up to replicating it just yet! (I MUST, though, for obvious reasons!)
I can definitely see why people DO love prismacolors, though. They ARE bright and shiny, and the older ones were nice and smooth. I just can't seem to get them to work using my usual methods, though I, too, keep my set of 36 around. But the breaking, AUGH WHY. You can render an entire pencil useless with one accidental fatal drop!
I'll definitely be acquiring more Caran d'Ache as time goes on. They are soft, but don't wear down fast, the pigments are beautiful, they don't shatter, and they blend well with Derwents. I think they work better on a textured paper like vellum or pastel. (Then again, I don't really like working on smooth paper.)
I've heard many good things about Faber Castell Polychromos as well, but they do not sell open stock anywhere I've looked just yet. Maybe I just missed them! I'd like to sample them.
Back to Derwents: Are you using the Studio, Artists, or Coloursoft lines? I'm really really digging the coloursofts. So. Nice.

Oho, mahogany bay! Good luck with that one; those kinds of coat colors have such an elusive luster to them.
Yeah, I'm certainly not knocking Prismas, especially if they suit better for certain techniques. I just find them far too fragile and too waxy, since I layer a lot.
Depending on how my situation goes, some Caran d'Ache are near the top of my "Art Necessities." Also better paper. I hate working on smooth paper as well, at least as far as pencils are concerned. Been wanting to try Stonhenge paper actually, but my Canson paper (same stuff you use) so far performs brilliantly.
Coloursoft! They are really nice and they blend like butter. Also they're pretty lightfast. Want to get my hands on some Studios as well for better detailing though.
