Description Lineart: 0.5 mechanical pencil.
Color: Adobe Photoshop 7.0.

This is a quick sketch I did last year sometime that I only just decided to screentone. (It's not real screentone, by the way.) There are flaws aplenty, I know, but I decided not to put this in Scraps because I like how it came out. ^^

These characters come from the beautiful and elegant anime/manga, "Loveless." Youji, on the left, and Natsuo, on the right, make up Zero - my 2nd favorite pairing after the Loveless/Beloved team of course. <3 I'm also partial to Breathless for some reason. And errrr... Natsuo is sans eye-patch here because I accidentally left it out... depth perception ftw.

Omg! I still cannot believe no one has seen this today! This is SO good. I recognized this art from Loveless right off teh bat. How do you do the tones so well?

I'm glad you recognized and liked this. Actually I didn't use any screentones at all, since my computer got wiped recently so I lost all my graphics... It only looks like screentone because of some minor effects I did in Photoshop. If you're really interested, message me and I'll let you know my process.

Thanks for looking! <3

[Caution: long-winded reply ahead!]

Well this is what I did: after cleaning up the lineart and setting it as my topmost layer, I paintbucket'ed a light-to-medium shade of gray under the lineart. Used the eraser tool to get rid of the gray in the background and also to make the white 'highlights' (which is basically how they do tones in real life). Then, with this 'tone' layer selected, I applied a Filter>Noise>Add Noise to get the speckled page appearance. After that, I picked a slightly darker shade of gray to make the shadows and put it in a new layer above the faux screentone; set the shadow layer to "Multiply." After that, you can duplicate any of the layers and change the layer settings to make them darker, lighter, more speckled, or whatever...

Sorry if that was too detailed or a bit confusing. What I really recommend is for you to play around with layers and filters. There's probably even an easier way to do what I did, and if you find it, please let me know. I hope I've helped. Happy doodles to you!
