You don't recognize yourself when you meet your gaze in the mirror. It's not the blood and the dirt, it's your eyes. They've seen too much and now they look tired and lifeless, like you've already lived a thousand years. Just a month ago, they would sparkle when you thought of boys or school or horses.

You don't think about those things anymore. You think about survival. Where is a good place to hide, how to find food, what can be used as a weapon? Those questions are always in the back of your mind.

You're safe in this bathroom for now, but you know they're close. It's like they can smell you. And eventually you have to go out there again. You need to eat.

Will it be like this all the time? Tired and hungry, always on the run? Is being alive really worth all this?
A few minutes of pain as they bite and claw you to death then an eternity of oblivion. It doesn't seem like such a bad deal to you.

The only thing stopping you from going out to embrace your death, is the nagging suspicion that there is no rest, not even for the dead. And that maybe they suffer even more than you do...
