Description "You try, Byron. What's five plus seven?"

Byron considered. Five and seven probably got along okay. Seven was a jerk, but five was a gutsy little fellow. He smiled. Five could handle seven just fine. Byron liked five. So togetherβ€”

"Concentrate, Byron."

"I am, Miss. It's . . ." Something pretty, but also quite complicated. ". . . twelve!"

It's cool to hear that other people experience this kind of thing too.

This is really well done, especially in just 55 words
I have (what may be) a mild form of synaesthesia, though mine is related to color and taste rather than numbers or letters.

That sounds pretty cool - or is it? Sometimes I think we just romanticise things because they're different.

It can be pretty cool. My strongest sense is with the color yellow. I can put my hand in a bag of skittles and tell which ones are yellow by touch. It kinda freaks people out XD

How absolutely and utterly enthralling! I've not come across this word synaesthesia before, although I've seen rare examples of its prowess in the past. What you've managed to do in only fifty-five words is outstanding, a whole story in it's own right, with a comical element neatly squeezed between the lines

PaperDart In reply to Fluxicity [2010-12-10 18:45:18 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I'm flattered.

The best known forms of synaesthesia involve mixing up the senses - like hearing colours or tasting musical notes - but it's a broad and fascinating topic.

Thanks for the fav, too!

That's amazing, I never thought about numbers having personalities, colours, maybe a feeling but not quite a personality like that. (Although when I thought about it some more I kind of do have preferences for some numbers over others, which made me wonder why.) Nice piece, reminds you to think outside the box, and in such a short piece too

wyldhoney [2010-07-08 04:48:47 +0000 UTC]

Seven's a jerk? Hmm... kinda headstrong maybe, and often a number villains choose to gather in. But five is more often the number of the annoyingly goody two shoes. I always liked seven better, though it's no four or nine.

My daughter's going to grade 1 next year, and she's got quite the imagination. I think this may be a glimpse of the future.

I think actual synaesthesia is fairly rare, but I bet she could come up with something similar anyway.

Thanks! I actually forgot about that symbolism when I wrote this, but it's cool to see it ties in the way I would ave done it anyway. (Seven is arrogant.) Maybe it was a subconscious thing. The comment is much appreciated.

I don't assign personalities to numbers, but I give them unrelated values. Four is my personal favorite.

55 words. Impressive!

PaperDart In reply to Friedemann [2010-07-07 17:40:37 +0000 UTC]

Four is the first square number, and she can be a little smug about that. She's very nice, though.
