Description This piece is very old. I hadn't planned on posting it, but decided to post it as a part of Traditional Day.

The piece is 5x5" and is made from 1 ply white museum board. The image is of Kaneda on his motorcycle from Akira. I did this piece not too long after completing the Priss sculpture ([link] ).

I was still learning and there are many things I would change if I did this piece over (primarily, I think I would do it in color and I would have done some texture on the tire.), but I do like it and loved the movie as well. I'm not sure if it can be seen, but I did put a wind shield on the bike. It is plastic and may not show up well in the photo.

Thank you very much!  I keep thinking I should remake it in color.  But I think a lot of things.

One of my fav animes of all time. Love the highlight for the windshield, great touch.

Thanks! The windshield is actually made of plastic, so that highlight is actually real as opposed to being constructed with paper.

Wow, I didn't even realize, I thought you had used water or some other liquid to affect the color of the paper slightly. Still amazing thought : D

Thanks!  I like to try different techniques and materials sometimes, but generally end up with just using paper.

Just watched the movie, and wanted to look up Akira artwork on deviantart. Yours caught my eyes. It's really amazing at first I thought it was stone, but i caught a closer glance. I love the dimension the paper gives kaneda and his bike

Thanks very much. This image provided some challenges because of the foreshortening of the bike and I'm glad it reads as well as it does, based on the feedback I have received.

They can be difficult. Each piece presents its own challenges, but I learn something new with each piece that helps with the next one.

Is this a bas-relief?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

paperfetish In reply to HP-Bloodcraft [2011-01-24 02:29:52 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for your question. It isn't a bas-relief. Rather than carving the detail from a material, I cut, shape and layer the paper to create the illusion of depth. It is an additive process rather than a subtractive one; if that makes sense?

How do you create the pop out effect?

paperfetish In reply to Kt17 [2010-07-23 00:32:11 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much, and thank you for your question.

I use knitting needles to bend and curve the paper into shape and the glue the pieces together. In this case, I also did some scoring and folding to create the handle bars and the wheel. Once sections are assembled, I attach them to each other and use foam core supports underneath to raise them from the flat background.

That is really damn cool. If you don't mind my asking, about how long did it take to you make this piece?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

paperfetish In reply to LedzieCampbell [2010-05-27 01:28:50 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much.

I don't mind the question at all. I don't remember exactly how long it took, but it did take a while. I think I worked on it for about two weeks, working on it in the evenings after work, for a couple of hours. Most of that time was spent trying to figure out how to construct it and how to represent the different elements. I do like the end product, but I would do things a little differently if I were to do it again.

This piece was one of my first pieces. The lettering here is embossed, but if you check out some of the sports logos, you can see some cut letters.
