Description Earlier today I had to put my ferret, Lily, to sleep. Because of the tumors in her pancreas caused by her Insulinoma- she was in extreme pain. The only thing that they could do for her was to give her a shot for the pain that would sedate her but once it wore off- she would be back where we started. My mom had wanted me to get her the shot but having to live doped up all the time is not a quality life.

I am also a strong supporter of "Death with Dignity" . I have never understood why it is considered humane to put a suffering animal down but doctors will let you suffer until you go naturally.

I hear a lot of people say that if they became really disabled/terminally ill they're want to kill themselves. I can understand why. We've been taught from an early age that disability should be avoided at all costs & is seen as a fate worse than death.

There are many serve rely disabled people however, that disagree with this view.

But don't take my word for it.

Yeah I work in a healthcare setting. If I ever got to the point where I couldn't function independently then I wouldn't want to be alive. Now I'm speaking for myself here. People can choose (well to a certain extent) what they want to do with their lives. My grandfather died of Alzheimer's disease. I only have one hazy memory of him before he had the disease otherwise most of my time spent with him was when he had the disease. I was told by my aunts and uncles how different he was before the disease. A different person really. I've studied that disease and I would never want to lose my mind slowly but surely. I also wouldn't want a disease that slowly but surely causes physical deterioration. I also wouldn't want to be kept on a machine for longer than 24 hours. I support Death with Dignity. When I get to a certain age, I will definitely have my DNR, wills, power of attorney, etc. all settled. Hopefully, if I'm ever in a coma or lost in dementia or paralyzed by ALS, my significant other/close friends/relatives respect my wishes.

I am curious. What defines "death with dignity"? Does it mean that someone does of old age, body intact, and then burial rights carried out in a manner that preserves the body? Because theoretically, what if a person wants to die getting eaten by a dragon? On one hand, that would be a cool way to die, but then the body is dragon food. Or viking burials, where the body is burnt on a wooden raft as it is kicked into the ocean? Again, they thought it was a cool way to get "buried".

What I'm asking is, is death with dignity about dying how you want, or dying so that your body still looks pretty? Because at this point, death with dignity appears to be "die in a way that you think looks cool".

You shouldn't kill animals that didn't ask to die.
But you should kill humans who do ask to.
But it is the other way around. *~Idiotic World~*

either way animals can't say if they want to die or not

That's the point. We shouldn't kill them, even if they are sick. They can't say that they want to die.

i get what ur saying... But a lot of people can't afford medicine for their pet. What do they do, let the poor thing suffer or let the poor thing take natures course. Just because something is natural doesn't mean it's right or wrong... I'm not saying your thoughts are wrong.

This!
I give my mice yummy treats and spoil them with toys and stuff. A study showed if a mouse eats healthy stuff, they live much longer than ones fed junk. I still feed them junk because they enjoy it so much (I share my chips with them) and its better to have a great short life than a boring long life.

Bean my mouse loves a bit of leftover vanilla cake!

Also...sorry about Lily

That was what my persuasive speech was on--death with dignity. I've always been a strong supporter of it--and I'm all for this stamp as well. I had to do a similar thing to my rat, Ember, back in January who had a brain tumor.

Why can't we put them down too?

If I ever get a terminal disease with no hope of ever living a good life, I want to get fucked up on every type of drug I can get my hands on, then have somebody strap me with explosives hooked up to a dead man's switch and push me out of a plane directly over Fred Durst's house while writing "Sorry 'n Shit!" in the sky.

Or, you know, just dress me in a nice suit, let me smoke a final joint, and put some of that lethal injection shit in me.

Indeed.

Although recently I've picked a new favorite way to die: All of the atoms that compose me being simultaneously and instantly "deleted" from existence. No trace left except in the hearts and minds of those I've touched....in so many ways.

This is one reason why I'm happy to live in Oregon: we allow something like this under certain restrictions. It's actually kinda comforting for me, oddly enough.

Thus the reason I feel sorry for drug babies that come into this world. They literally have to be given the drug in which their druggie mothers kept taking during their pregnancy with the kid just so they can keep living. And half the time, they barely make it past the first year. There's only a small amount of cases where they even make it to school. Like my Uncle's kids, who has a druggie party girl for a mother. Two of his itty bitties are drug babies.

It's really sad. To know that the very thing that has given them a life of misery and strife is also the very thing keeping them alive.

Berryz1cute [2010-12-21 00:59:52 +0000 UTC]

I completely agree. I'll never forget visiting my grandmother in the hospital, passing all the rooms of people moaning and groaning in pain, and questioning my mother why they couldn't just "put them to sleep," like we could with animals, and never getting a straight answer from her, even the 4-year-old me could understand that it wasn't right.

And I'm sorry about your ferret. My cat will have to be put to sleep tomorrow or today because of a tumor in her mouth causing her pain. But every time we give her medicine, and she turns back into the calm kitty that taps your hand to say "Pet me!!" my mother wants to post-pone it another week, and I have to repeat, "Mom, when it wears off she will be in the same horrible pain again, you love her don't you? Then do it now, and she will go without the pain!" over and over to her.

I agree with this sentiment... people should be allowed to end their own lives.

On the flip side... they should also be the ones to determine at which point it is proper to be killed. If someone wants to be alive in a state that most people wouldn't, they should be allowed to (so long as they have the resources available to pay for their care.)

I'm pretty sure Euthanasia is Greek for "good death". (Or my memory isn't serving me very well and I sound like an ignorant retard).

(Either way, I am in favour good deaths). You can be happy in the knowledge you didn't let Lily suffer and that the life she had was an enjoyable one full of love.

My grandfather just died and he really believed in that concept. He would barely accept what the doctors did at all...but in the end I was happy that he got one last thing he wanted in life. He went with dignity surrounded by our family. This was just over a week ago.
