Description "Google it."

"Do I want to?"

"What do you mean? It's just Google."

"You say Google like it's a good thing. Like it's an entity that bears some sort of universal answer."

"It's a search engine. Nothing more, nothing less. Unless we go into Google Maps, but it's all the same difference, on some satellite-dish stalking level. You search for a place, it finds it for you. Especially in America. Yeah, they have the streets labeled in America."

"That's creepy. The zoom-in function too. Like, you can zoom down to street level and stare face to face with someone's house. Sometimes you can see their cars too. But never people. That's the part that irks me. They get all these pictures from space or something and capture what they claim to be the world and shit, and yet there are never any people in it –"

"–it them out."

"Hm, what?"

"They edit them out. The people. Privacy and shit. Imagine checking out Google Maps and being able to see everyone in their homes. Like, through the windows and all. Especially in America. I mean, some people might think that's cool, but it'd be hella creepy. Can you imagine going around your house, doing your business, when someone in the far distant corner of the world could just type in your address and see into your house? Heck, it wouldn't even have to be deliberate. It could be some bored kid going up and down the streets, checking out all the houses because he has nothing better to do. And he'd be watching you, without you knowing it."

"It's not live, at least."

"Yeah, but it'd still be you, and you wouldn't ever know."

"Still, think about the irony behind it. Editing out the people but leaving everything else behind? The same theory's applicable here. There could be some kid in the far corner of the universe looking into my house right now. Just because I'm not in the simulation doesn't mean that it isn't violating my privacy in some way. He could be some thief checking out the structure of my place. Heck, multiply that by street view and zoom."

"Well, if they edited everything out, it'd defeat the purpose, wouldn't it? It's Google Maps."

"What about Google Maps?"

"You're starting it all over again."

"Starting what all over again?"

"This thing of yours, with Google and all. Why are you making such a big thing out of it? It's Google, for god's sake."

"Well, you're implying something bigger when you say 'Google'. You're not referring to the corporation itself, but rather a larger entity on which you rely on."

"Google gives answers…?"

"It's like you're treating it as Deep Thought."

"Deep Thought?"

"You know, Hitchhiker's Guide and all? Douglas Adams? Forty-two?"

"Forty-two."

"Yes, it's the fictional answer to life, the universe, and everything in it."

"You do realize that Google provides that same answer, right?"

"Hm?"

"Type in 'the answer to life, the universe, and everything' and the Google calculator gives you forty-two as the answer."

"You're shitting me."

"I kid you not. Go type it in. There. Mm-hm. See?"

"Whoa. Shit. You got me there."

This piece is great, loads of fun and somewhat philosophical at the same time, and totally deserves the DD, so congratulations - not that that counts as critique, of course, but I shall get onto that now.

Reading through this, I stumbled over one line, and that is this: '...a larger entity on which you rely on'. So far the character has had impeccable grammar, so the double 'on' there seems incongruous (I'd take out the first one, personally).

Let me also mention the '-it them out' line. It did stop me for a second, although I do think it's good and adds to the technique - that one character should be talking over the other and a bit of dialogue be lost, and then that something so simple causes that character to stall and ask, 'What?' But like I say, it did trip me. It might just be me, but I'm wondering if somehow '-dit' would be better, so that it's not 'it' one after the other.

You are very clever to make this piece work without naming the characters or labelling the dialogue. Un-labelled dialogue can be difficult to follow, but in this piece it's always clear who's speaking. It flows beautifully and you set the pace really well. Nice work, and congratulations once again.

Took something the whole Internet knew about in 2006 already, and wrote it into a story. Not very original, and the chain of thought is hard to follow when the other person acts like the conversation didn't happen.

Short and unfocused besides philosophical arguments of the privacy of Google Earth and Google Maps; as well as our humanity to look towards Google for all our answers as if it's some godlike entity we rely on. Which in and of itself is true. I'd be an ignorant little wisp if it hadn't been for Google. It was a nice bit of read up to the reference to Hitchhiker's Guide. The entire piece seemed to be building up nice philosophically until that bomb was dropped. Nothing wrong with the writing style and technique, and the format flowed well.

Overall nice structure albeit substance-less content in the second half.

I like it. I especially appreciate the line where the first speaker is cut off by the second speaker when trying to say "They edit them out."

I would suggest, though, that you reduce the second-to-last-line to simply "I kid you not. Go type it in. See?" That would be quick and funny and more in keeping with your minimalistic style. The way the line currently stands, it seems a bit contrived and forced, a bit too description-y.

Actually, looking back, I'm not too fond of the "nothing more, mothing less" line in the second paragraph, either. It speaks strongly of the bit of cliche that colors the whole piece; but it's only a bit of cliche. All the same, it wouldn't hurt to go back through and re-work each line to be truly unique, original, and thoughtful. It depends on how much effort you want to put in.

Description-y? Seriously?
Descriptive.

Also, I know you're trying to give kind constructive criticism to *passingavery , but you sound like you're trying to be an ass.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Whes In reply to ZSW13 [2010-02-27 19:04:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, but "descriptive" isn't quite what I was going for. What I mean is that the line is a bit "too much like description" in a story where description is being intentionally omitted. (There's a slight nuance between the words.)

Also, be careful of calling the kettle black.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZSW13 In reply to Whes [2010-02-27 19:33:31 +0000 UTC]

I'm pretty sure that means descriptive, because there isn't another word that describes it.

I realize that I sounded like an ass too, yes. I was being a bit sarcastic because you sounded silly saying something like "description-y" while critiquing a literature piece intelligently.
