One submission for the Darksiders: Last Days competition.I was inspired to create this by a few things; first, a modern apocalypse will most likely either be global warming or nuclear weapons. Morbid, I know, but it seemed like a good starting point.
Second, someone once told me that during the Cold War, a time when the possibility of nuclear war between Russia and America was very real, it was said that running for fallout shelters was pointless; the best thing you could do in a nuclear attack would be to go outside, join hands with your loved ones and hope that it was all over quickly
Again, a disturbing and morbid thought, but then they were disturbing times :/
Anyways, thats where I got the idea for the two figures joining hands, with the mushroom cloud in the background. The lighting was a bitch to get right; if you spot any mistakes or have suggestions pleeeeease let me know so i can put them to use

EDIT: Unbeknownst to me, the mushroom cloud image I used originally was not stock; and had actually been developed for use as a PS3 ad campaign (it had a clown face in the cloud... Can't believe I didn't spot it before >.< See if you can see it: [link] )
Anyways, I have changed the image now. In my opinion it doesn't look as awesome as it did, but I can't submit something that is copyrighted. I prefer a quiet life xD More to the point the competition people would discount me immediately

I really like this. It is quite powerful. Usually I'm a bit funny when it comes to people's use of stock. I tend to judge the art more harshly when it is "merely manipulated" rather than created entirely by the arteest...
buut.. having said that, and having viewed the stock pieces you used, I think you have truly excelled in your use of the images to portray the idea inside your head
Especially, I like the shadows you've done around the fingers. It is not perfect, but I feel the imperfection (perhaps deliberate?) makes the image all the more resounding.

I see what you mean, I did feel I had cheated a little bit by simply doing a photomanip... but there are some things I feel I could never be able to draw properly - this being one of them.
Or if I did, it wouldn't look half as good.
The shadows and almost painterly effect was something of an accident yes; the Burn tool was misbehaving
the blurring was not - I was trying to create an impression of all the dust kicked up by the shockwave, and also the intensity of the light generated by the blast spilling past the buildings.

I do believe that the image of the mushroom cloud you used isn't actually stock. take a look at the source link and you'll see it is already manipulated; see the clown?

I know I reeeeally probably should have commented on this the moment I put it into my favorites, but I really couldn't come up with any words for what I experienced in that moment. I know we ended up discussing it later, but I just wanted to put my thoughts here as well. This is a very enchanting image. It really draws me in and makes me think about, and actually start to feel, the emotions a person in this situation would cycle through. It was a very peaceful moment.
As an artist, good sir, I believe this is a great success.

I don't know, sometimes my best work is produced when I'm not really trying to do anything in particular
and yes, it is very much wishful thinking. However there is one like that at my school - she doesn't teach me anymore but still helps me out. She's like my second mother ^_^

but even if the whole climate change thing is just lies, we should still sort out oil and other fossil fuel consumption - that stuff isn't going to last forever.

Oh I agree with that! There are a lot of problems that need dealt with. Climate change is pretty much just a fact of life / nature, but pollution, water shortages, these things we can deal with.
