One thing about sci fi probes I've never seen and wish I could. The probe lander could be two sections -- 1: the lander, which would contain the engine, guidance system and landing gear; and 2: the probe (or probes). A crane on the lander section would deposit the probes on the planet's surface, effectively making them autonomous (or semi-autonomous) from the lander/mothership.
