Thanks- shading is not so easy in acrylics, so I'm glad you like the results

I still like oils better, but for small scale work I find it difficult to control their fluidity due to their more viscous nature. Ideally doing the underlying work in acrylic and then the upper glazes and scumbling etc in oils works best for me.However, drying time can still become a factor with that method

Indeed, indeed.I'm doing that myself.I'm going for it all in acrylics and coming with oils for some effects or doing the underpainting with acrylics and then painting the actual piece in oils. It's great to mix, I just hope that it doesn't fall off in a few years or so.Did you have this problem before?

I keep the acrylic layer very thin. If it's on multimedia board or paper I never prime it before the acrylics go on. When they are done, I give it 2 coats of acrylic matte medium thinned with a bit water.
If it's on panel or canvas which is primed, I again keep the acrylics very thin and then give it one coat of the matte medium. (The matte medium provides adhesion for oils to grip . In the case of unprimed paper, illustration board or multimedia board it also seals the surface so the oil wont penetrate the ground)
