Description Before we dwell into the nitty-gritty, it should be noted two Deviants were the inspiration to what you’re viewing above. The first was user “WebDisaster01” for bringing the concept into existence, and user “PoeticIce” for agreeing to my insane ramblings over the parallels. Thanks mates.

Not to mention the fact which anyone new to my account should take note of: As of mid-2010, all ‘Sonic’ related books published by Archie Comics (all 2 of them, we never got the Archives to begin with) ceased regular distribution at newsagencies. This means a fair chunk of readers had to find new means of reading the latest issues, or miss out entirely (such as yours truly because of both comic book store unreliability, and the distinct lack of them down here due to a ‘small’ population). Rather than continue repetitive babblings, why not check out my last Journal entry (2010 Retroscpect: Part 2) for the whole story? Not that it will change anything, but perhaps viewing the matter through a local’s perspective can help.

Moving on, since I cannot read the issues, everything post STH#213 and SU#16 has been guesswork or relayed to me by other fans. And because of this, we have that rather interesting piece of artwork up there to comment or criticize.

Upon reading the synopsis of SU#25, a thought struck me hard. A dark universe with a power-mad anti-hero hanging bodies up in a throne room? Surely this is a bit like “Shattered Glass”? Look at it this way; Alpha Trion was evil in that reality and he strung up some interesting victims. An interesting parallel, but nothing more in retrospect.

What happened next was a revelation. Or perhaps a revolution. As the next 2 issues had their outlines sent to me, the “Shattered Glass” theory crumbled to pieces in favour of something far more sinister.

“Cor! This is a bit like flippin’ Beast Machines!”

Yes! The sequel to the highly-successful CGI “Beast Wars” (or “Beasties” if you’re Canadian) cartoon. Anyone remember what that involved? If not, here’s a recap quoted from Simon Furman:

“After the epic, but essentially upbeat, resolution of Beast Wars, the Beast Machines animated series, which first aired in 1999, took us to a darker, more dangerous world. Set on Cybertron, Beast Machines introduced a drastically altered reality wherein Megatron is ruler of a Cybertron, and Optimus Primal’s Maximals are outnumbered and outgunned by Megatron’s Vehicon Drones.”

Megatron (Enerjak) conquored Cybertron (Mobius), stripped the Sparks (Cores) from the Transformers (Mobians), and placed them in Vehicons (Prelates) to seek out and destroy the Maximals (Resistance). Our hero is Optimus Primal (Lara-Su), determined to lead a band of familiar characters, along with a powerful newcomer, to rescue the Sparks (Cores) and return Cybertron (Mobius) to a Organic (normal) world.

Just for a bit of fun, you could also ‘link’ a few of the characters/items together:

Optimus Primal: Lara-Su (obviously)
Cheetor: Bunnie (maybe)
Rattrap: Bean the Duck (both like weapons)
Blackarachnia: Fiona Fox (bad girl gone heroic)
Nightscream: Silver (c’mon, new hothead arrival…)
Rhinox: Rotor (err…)
Silverbolt: Antoine (Strikingly heroic)
Megatron: Enerjak (obvious)
Vehicon Drones: Prelates (assuming he has regular citizens)
Vehicon Generals: Chaotix Prelates.

Deserted Cybertron: Deserted Mobius
Sword of Acorn: Key to Vector Sigma
Spark: Core

And before people start to accuse me of bashing Ian through incredibly coincidental parallels, don’t. There’s nothing wrong pointing out a vastly overlooked reference. When fans took a swipe at the “Other M” factors, some did it constructively, and it’s hoped you can see that here. Anyone who thinks I’m being cruel and unreasonable to their favourite writer have been warned nothing of the sort was intended. Though I have a feeling some of you may not have made it this far into the post, so there is no doubt I may have to once more play the proverbial record. Life goes on…

Megatron! Yes I know that is the Grand Mal head on a body, which totally wasn’t part of his design. While I do like the “Hannibal” face-mask, there was something about his floating head form I liked more, so it was chosen instead.

Enerjak! Was that redesign intended? You bet! Why? Initially to have a crack shot at testing what I would have done with the character, but now a more secure means of keeping this image up. See, I have absolutely no doubt there is somewhere in those 4 issues a drawing of Enerjak standing on a right angle snarling. Had I drawn him in the regular design, someone would probably see the image and shout “Plagiarist!” without reading any of the above. So how do I protect myself from misunderstandings? Redesign the character! Hopefully the new look (without being too unrecognisable) will ensure I don’t have to play the proverbial broken record again, but I doubt it will work. Can’t please the fans…

Wrapping this up, I leave you viewers a question: Who is the most influential of the above? BW/BM Megatron or Enerjak? Who frightens you more? Cast your vote here, but I have a feeling it will not set aside their differences. So how can we determine who’s greater?

FIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!

(And what do you mean Enerjak sunk Downunda?! First we don’t get the issues, now they destroy our home? Those fellows over at Archie Comics have a lot to answer for…)

Beast Era Megatron is a polymath and his tremendous combat skill is supplemented by an immeasurable intellect. Enerjak doesn't stand a chance.

That's pretty neat. To be honest, the Halo franchise is something I have utterly no clue about beyond the fact it exists, and playing a brief demo several years back. Looks entertaining though.

But still, the Composer is pretty similar, is it?

Quite so. Though it does lead to some pretty interesting possibilities. Maybe Megatron was strapped for credits to fund his scheme of reformatting Cybertron into a technological paradise, and did a deal with the Forerunners.

"Shattered Glass" is a recently-created continuity (circa 2008) that involves the concept of Autobots being evil, and Decepticons as the heroes. Think of it as a complete turn-around of the regular Transformers norm. Optimus Prime is a gun-toting maniac, while Megatron is the pacific scholar.

Unfortunately the action figures sell for ridiculous prices on the secondary market, and all stories are limited to the Transformers Collector's Club website, which will cost you. Though summaries are on the Transformers Wiki.

The only reason as to why I suggested this was "Shattered Glass" was on account of how Enerjak hung up bodies on his wall, similar to what Alpha Trion did.

Not to mention how "Shattered Glass" featured Alpha Trion as the kindly old hero with a powerful sword and turns out to be evil. This was of course revealed in the "Reunification" arc.

Funnily enough, Lara-Su made her debut in an Archie Sonic story titled "Reunification". You don't think...?

Anyway, it feels personally at this point in time there's a number of parallels to "Beast Machines", another Transformers story that I recommend you read up on.

"Shattered Glass" is certainly worth a look-in, if you can afford the fee. For a menagerie of synopsis information, check out the Transformers Wiki. That should get you up-to-date on this strange and dangerous world.

Yes, the eye design was something of a giveaway, even if the same concept was used for Sutekh the Destroyer.

Wow.....well never thought about the Beast Machines cause well after Beast Wars I kinda *shrug* meh didn't really understand what was going on and it was always a bit to dark so I couldn't see much of the action for some odd reason......anyway awesome picture

PaulAgnew In reply to SonicGal390 [2011-05-02 02:40:02 +0000 UTC]

You are not alone. The whole "Beast Machines" franchise is viewed by many fans as quite poorly executed.

The first problem was the cartoon's plot. Animals on Cybertron? Invaded by robot travellers who transformed to adapt? This completely through the already-established mythos of Primus/Quintessons out the window. It's hard enough to take something already established and swing it for six, expecting the fans to appreciate it.

The series of toys were thrown all over the place. Considering the primary target was kids, it seemed (apparently) appropriate to release "mega" and "ultra" versions (out-of-scale, but that's another story) of child-appealing characters (my gosh that Supreme Cheetor hung around until at least 2009). Not to mention the infamously-off colour schemes and price increase (down here).

This combined with the show only broadcast on cable TV meant "Beast Machines" went down the plug, which is unfortunate.

Yeah and I really didn't like how they made SilverBolt into a condor I liked it when he was a Furzor that was neat and I liked the character's Beast Wars designs better -..- thou really hated that whiny bat boy NightScream

PaulAgnew In reply to SonicGal390 [2011-05-04 01:51:01 +0000 UTC]

Of course, the initial purpose of Transformers: To Sell Toys. The only reason why some of the other figures didn't get on the show was due to time and budget. It's a miracle that Tigerhawk even appeared by the end of Beast Wars.

If you purchase the TRU Japan exclusive BM Silverbolt, at least he's in the right colour scheme. Or even the 2003 Universe Silverbolt which is his BW body with BM show-accurate (debatable, depending on what you call "accurate") colours.

Ah yes, let's not forget the supposed kiddie-relatable Nightscream. Though some of us couldn't forget him even if we tried. Really, Nightscream takes a while to get used to.

Just for the record, you read it here first: There may be another Deviation in the works based on the parallels these stories have sometime down the track. It might be of interest, yeesss...
