Maybe this would have avoided the Dahlerau accident... The station inspector said that he showed the red side of his hand signal, while the driver of a freight train later stated that he saw the green one. The freight collided with a railbus full of schoolchildren in a single track line, the lightweight railbus being no match for the engine...

Yes it is. After the station master realized that the freight didn't stop, he called the other station and told them to stop the railbus, but that had just departed. As train radios were not yet a standard, there was no way to warn either train. He called emergency services, informing them about a crash that is about to happen...

But at least people learned. Train radios developed into standard equipment, and the newer DMUs were considerably safer when it comes to crashes. The railbus was compacted to one third of its lenght, which probably gave engineers food for thought about the forces that arise with tons of steel on the roll. The freight engine suffered little to no damage in the crash, remaining in use until 2002.

I wonder what type of emergency would prompt them to use THREE lanterns instead of one?
