Description
The beefcake of the Morrison plains, Stegosaurus leads a unique life. Stegosaurus is somewhat territorial and wary of attackers, commonly turning around and swinging its spiked tail around at any hints of danger; strangely enough, it is also capable of tolerating other members of its species outside of the breeding season, as well as Camptosaurus herds. In fact, Stegosaurus shares a mutualistic relationship with Camptosaurus; while Stegosaurus protect the herd against predators, Camptosaurus serve as lookouts for danger. Eating is a full-time job, and mosses, ferns, horsetails, and cycads form a great part of Stegosaurus’ diet. Stegosaurus is very protective of what it eats, even going as far as to push neighboring Camptosaurus away from the plants it chooses to eat. Males and females can be distinguished by color, with males having darker brown skin and more flamboyant plates; both sexes brilliantly flash their plates in order to attract a mate and scare away predators respectively, and also utilize their thagomizers to swipe at any carnivore foolish enough to come near them. While adults are rarely bothered by predators other than Allosaurus and Torvosaurus, young Stegosaurus are vulnerable to many Morrison predators due to their still-forming armor, and either must hide from predators or seek shelter in the company of more imposing targets.
