Description Yeah, my first drawing of Dinovember doesn't feature any extinct theropods, nor does it feature any sauropods or ornithischians.

But, in all honesty, who can turn down a drawing featuring those birds? Other than being very cool and unique in their own right, these 10 birds are my top 10 favorite. Reasons are down below...

1: Larus delawarensis (ring-billed gull): Seagulls are just plain amazing. They're mid-sized birds that hang out near the seaside, eat small fish and crustaceans, and also give little to no fucks about anything around them. Since this little fella is the archetypical seagull, I decided he'd be my favorite.
2: Corvus corax (common raven): Covered in pretty black feathers. Adaptable omnivore. Perhaps the smartest bird alive. 'nuff said.
3: Columba livia (racing pigeon): These birds are also pretty intelligent, and they have some really nice and shiny plumage! Not to mention watching them drink water is a nice little sight!
4: Gyps africanus (white-backed vulture): Vultures are really great birds. They're basically living garbage disposal workers, picking carcasses clean with their beaks and preventing the world from being a diseased, pest-ridden wasteland (although our treatment of them is less than fair). Many people think of the lappet-faced vulture when they think of these beautiful soaring scavengers, but I like this one because of the nice little patches of fluff on its nape. (It's also because of the sounds they make, but that's besides the point.)
5: Psittacus erithacus (African grey parrot): One individual African grey managed to be the smartest parrot in the world, being just as smart as the great apes and dolphins. If that isn't impressive, what is?
6: Cariama cristata (red-legged seriema): You may know this guy as the closest living relative of the once-great phorusrhacids; however, even on its own, this bird is amazing. It's fast, it has an efficient killing method, and it likes dust baths.
7: Pelecanus erythrorhynchos (American white pelican): Despite being overly partial to seagulls, I also think pelicans are really neat. Their throat pouches are really useful for keeping fish in their mouths, and the diving maneuvers they perform after spotting fish from above are a sight to behold. This should not go without mentioning that they're the odd ones out in their order; other pelecaniform birds are long-legged waders with even weirder bills than their famous cousins!
8: Aquila chrysaetos (golden eagle): Honestly, I could care less about the bald eagle; to me, it's interesting, but not as interesting as some of the other species of eagle. However, I like golden eagles because they're widespread, they're powerful apex predators, and, to me, their calls are pretty pleasant to hear.Β
9: Struthio camelus (common ostrich): This is one of the fastest birds to ever run across the savannas of Africa (running at 43 mph), which, in itself, is a respectable trait. Also, I like their graceful gait.
10: Geococcyx californianus (greater roadrunner): Although it's not as fast as the ostrich, this little fella is pretty fast for its size, clocking at 20 mph. Not to mention it preys on venomous rattlesnakes, which just makes this little cutie a little badass as well. (Also, please tell me if I messed up on its coloration; I feel less confident about it than I do about the other birds.)

More drawings will come as the weekend passes!

As for your point about bald eagles, technically they aren’t even in the clade...

"Eagle" is a polyphyletic clade, just like "hawk", "kite", and "buzzard". The Haliaeetus sea eagles are most closely related to the kites of the genus Milvus. The hawk-eagles andΒ AquilaΒ eagles, on the other hand, are closer to the so-called "buzzards" of the genus Buteo. And harpy eagles and serpent eagles are completely unrelated to either group.Β

I mean β€œeagle” as in true eagles or aquilines.
