Description Her red fur scanned really dull and dirty. I mean, I accidentally made it too dark in the first place (Chaka should be more orange) but the scanner made it into an ugly hue. Well, at least all my shading appears to be present everywhere but her clothing. The middle value of blue was eaten by the scan, so know that the shading is better in real life.

This was the last sketch I did before school began, and only now have I been able to finish it. By procrastinating on my schoolwork. I'm pleased save for the aforementioned issues with her red fur and some anatomical problems with her torso. Her boobs and navel just aren't aligned with her midline... Whoops... Makes her legs look like they're attached wrong.

Notice that Chaka's arms are more defined and muscular than my other characters. I didn't show it well, but she's supposed to have somewhat skinny wrists and ankles compared to the others. She's also the thinnest after Shirinara, but is more shapely.

Sakura Pigma Micron, Staedtler Triplus Fineliners, Prismacolor markers.

The colors! They are so beautiful! D: *dies*

I love the hint of the wind... how it's blowing all the grass and her braid back... the swirl of the clouds... and most especially, the joyful look on her face. She has a lot of presence, too. I love how rich the blue of her garments are.

Your characters are all so sweet and warm! I just love 'em.

Wow, I'm so glad you like it. I've been trying hard to make my art less like "still shots" and more like "freeze frames". And Chaka is freakin' FUN to draw.

Thanks so much for all of the awesome comments, Starrie. Always so very appreciated.

She's so pretty. It's a gentle reminder that I need to get back to the anthro challenge one of these days. I really like the pose and the swirling clouds behind her. Great work.

Thanks so much. Chaka is always a blast to draw. I took a four-month break on my 10 Anthro Challenge... I love challenges like this that don't have time limits.

I like Chaka! She is very interesting, and different. Her colours, hair style and clothes are really beautifull (I love her hair colour )

Besides you are making really cool reference pictures, showing all the differences between your characters. That really helps a lot, when it comes to make pics of them

Despite the problems it's quite nice. The pose and expression are dramatic, making me anxious to know what's about to happen. The rock formations and swirling clouds add to that effect. It's always hard to talk about colors with all the hungry scanners out there, but I like what I can see in color combinations.

If this is scanned dull then the original must be one glowing bright! Very nice one by the way. I also wonder what you do that the colours look so fine and flawless like this. So is the picture in whole!

I must say, I do love the way you do the hair on this chara...she always has such amazingly colored hair!
I love how unique she is, she's just so great! and I love her expression as she looks at that gnoll..teehee, what a fun word.
hmm, as critique, I'd say you might want to create a bit more depth with the rocks. YOu've done a really great job showing the texture of the rocks and all the different rock faces, but its hard to tell if she is in a rock valley sorta thing or if she's just got two rocks behind her that are flat. So, I'd say create a bit more depth by having the forward part of the rock face be a bit darker than the back part of the rock face. I'd also make the different facets of the rock a bit more pronounced...of course, this is me getting picky! You really have gotten really really a lot better at percpective and unique backgrounds! Out of curiousity, are those clouds done with the blending marker?

Peachfuzz In reply to CrazySkye [2007-10-07 02:28:47 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the kind comment and the helpful input, Skye! Seems like any time I do anything including rocks, I get more critique than otherwise. They're a weak point of mine.

Nope, no Colorless Blender at all in the clouds. It's just Cream and a touch of Deco Yellow. I purposely let the Cream overlap the Canary Yellow and Sunburst Yellow of the sky just a bit to get a depth effect. Any marker color will do that to a darker one, it's not just the blender.

CrazySkye In reply to Peachfuzz [2007-10-07 20:10:41 +0000 UTC]

well, the only way to make things better is to try, right? and I'm so glad to see you always workin on those rocks, they really have improved!
I love cream...it rocks my socks.

Peachfuzz In reply to CrazySkye [2007-10-07 22:53:36 +0000 UTC]

Deco Yellow is the marker I use the absolute most, but Cream is up there. I'm also brutal on my Cool Grays.

I see what you mean about the soft-edged blending. It's great! Don't feel too bad about her skin tone darkening, because she looks backlit with that golden sky. The only suggestion I'd make based on this one is to make the distant cliffs more rugged, hard-edged when you do another landscape like that with cliffs. Even distant cliffs have a broken, jagged look to them. They don't have strong value differences, they get cooler and bluer and less distinct but they do still have a sharp look more than that.

Streaks of golden highlight in the cliffs and long shadows that are that purply-bluish gray would help with that. Look at photo references of cliffs and mountains carefully, especially when the mountains are in the distance. You'll see the patches of highlight and shadow on them and the way highlights will change color just after dawn and right before sunset, to be yellower. But it's a minor point in a great picture, this is more for future reference. I don't think you could do yellowish highlights after it's dried.

I think you're right. Markers are applying liquid and in essence you're painting when you use them. Which is why you're so good and I'm better with pencils. I'm still learning painting.

Peachfuzz In reply to robertsloan2 [2007-10-06 17:03:14 +0000 UTC]

I do seem to "paint" with my markers, but I'm still useless at painting with paint!

Rocks are always the death of me. Thanks a ton for the helpful input! I need all the ideas I can get to improve my rocks and rock structures. I can totally imagine this with the purpley-blue shadows you suggested, and it would have been so easy to do had I only known to do it!

robertsloan2 In reply to Peachfuzz [2007-10-06 20:28:32 +0000 UTC]

Try sculpting cliffs out of modeling clay, just cheap kids modeling clay, in gray or blue. Set them up on the desk, do two sets sort of facing each other. Slide your desk lamp down till it's coming in at a low angle across these little sculptures. Look at what the shadows do to the shapes and what promontories are highlighted. Then draw from it. Very often doing a kneaded eraser or modeling clay model of a background element can give really good shadows and highlights as long as you arrange your lamp to be at the angle the sun is for the art. With that color of sky, the sun is low but not quite behind the horizon.

Oh, and I noticed Chaka's hands look a bit small, but I'm not too familiar with this character so you might have done that on purpose, huh?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Peachfuzz In reply to Slounces-Zoo [2007-10-05 03:16:48 +0000 UTC]

Hands too small? Whoopsies, no, that certainly wasn't intentional! Thanks for pointing it out. They do look mighty little now that you mention it.

Her hair changes color like that because the pigment in bongo fur rubs off easily. So I figure that by the time it grows that long, the color would be gone at the end.
