Hydreigon's Hoard - Part 1
<--Part 1 <-Previous - Next->

I'm still not entirely sure what I'm going to do for the rest of the story, whether I'll continue on by drawing a picture and writing about the adventure, or trying a comic. I did have fun with this so far though! I'm not sure if I'll continue in this drawing style since it took a really long time, but... we'll see.

Also, I think it's kind of funny, how so many other teams have gorgeous, complex home bases, and all I imagine Cotopaxi and Commodore to have is a small, plain den by the beach, barely large enough for the two. I might add some stuff in there to make it a bit more homey later. Oh, and I refer to it as Cotopaxi's den in the text, because she's the one who originally dug it out before she even met Commodore. Commodore doesn't really have a place he calls home, since he's always out and about, but this den is probably the closest he's come to having one.

I might give them a better home later on, as they become more successful with their missions, but this will do for now.

Team Application:

----------------------------------

"Hey! Hey, Coto!"

Commodore, a young Oshawott, ran to the Torkoal's den excitedly, his scarf flapping behind him. In his rush, he nearly ran off the ledge onto the beach, yelping as he regained his balance.

"Cotopaxi! You awake?"

Yawning, the Torkoal lifted her head in greeting. Why and how the Oshawott managed to move around so quickly (and so early!), she would never understand. There he was, bouncing up and down on the ledge above her with anticipation, with a paper rolled up in his paws.

"Good! You're awake! You will never guess what I've got!" Commodore teased, waving the rolled-up paper down in front of her.

Cotopaxi looked up at him, raising an eyebrow. Of course she knew what that was. They had just posted the missions for new recruits, hadn't they?

"Oh, alright, smarty-pants! I know you know it's our first mission," Commodore said, pouting with his paws on his hips. With a sideways grin, he continued, "But! You'll never guess what our mission is! I made sure to get there early so we could have our pick, and I got the very best, most awesome, exciting one!"

Cotopaxi had to admit, her interest was piqued. She looked on with anticipation as Commodore unrolled the paper. She had seen some of the other guilds' missions that were posted the day before. Maybe they were going to help the Rescuers by finding that Scrafty, or possibly do something like rearranging Kangaskhan's storage with the Merchants. It was a long-shot, having been pulled into the Rogues by Commodore, but Cotopaxi smiled at the thought. It was their first mission, after all. Gunpowder wouldn't assign anything too involved on their first run, would he?

Her jaw dropped, as Commodore answered her question by waving the now open paper in front of her. Three sets of red eyes and sharp fangs stared back at her from the assignment. "Hydreigon," it read, "Very dangerous. Raid hoard. Watch out for his lava moat and guard heads. Bring back as much as you can. Good luck!"

Cotopaxi gulped and frowned back at the happy Oshawott. Sure, he liked adventure, but did he really think they stood a chance at getting past an Hydreigon? And if it caught them, how would they ever defeat it?

"Isn't it grea— Hey!"

Cotopaxi, irritated with her friend's naïveté, rolled her eyes and withdrew back into her warm shell.

Commodore jumped down in front of her, peeking in to meet her annoyed glare. "Aw, you're just grumpy because I woke you up from your nap!" When he got no response, he continued, "Look, I know he looks scary, but they wouldn't have assigned this as a mission for new recruits if it was that dangerous!"

Still irritated, Cotopaxi drew her head out again. Using a claw, she drew in the sand. "DRGN," she wrote.

"Dragon?" Commodore looked at her, confused. "I know it's a dragon. What, are you scared of dragons?"

She shook her head, and began gesturing sharply to her furnace and to Commodore himself.

"What are you— oh." Finally, it dawned on him. Frowning, he continued, "Fire and water aren't effective on dragons."

Almost immediately though, he perked up again. "Well, it's not like we have to fight it! We just have to sneak and get some of his treasure! Come on, don't worry!" He grinned widely, as he could see Cotopaxi contemplate his words. "Haha, I'll protect you if things get too hot in there!"

Cotopaxi sighed, and got herself to her feet. It wasn't herself that she was worried about, but she knew Commodore would get himself into trouble if she didn't come with him. He'd probably march in there and try to rush things, getting himself caught. He never was very good at waiting for an opportune moment.

"Yes! That's the spirit!" Commodore cheered. "On to adventure!" He ran off ahead of her, in the direction of Hydreigon's cave.

Again, Cotopaxi sighed and shook her head. From the sound of it, Hydreigon's cave was quite a distance away, for her at least. Commodore could probably get there before noon on his own, but with her? They'd be lucky if they got there before sundown. Reluctantly, she trudged as quickly as she could after her friend.
