Description A work-in-progress of the final illustration requested Warner Bros, and appearing in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies 3D Extended Edition DVD & Blu-ray box-set, in a 'Making of ...' documentary (2015).

I was asked to create an image of Elves looking 'fierce' in battle, and to base it roughly on the template established in one of my older paintings The Ride of the Rohirrim . Accordingly, I decided to go with Gwindor's foolish charge on Angband which effectively began the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, or Battle of Unnumbered Tears, and ended in the utter ruin of the Noldor (and the Free Peoples of Beleriand more generally) as a force capable of enclosing - let alone defeating - the armies of Morgoth in the North.

I don't ordinarily submit line works of my paintings, however I felt this looked nice enough as a stand alone piece to warrant an appearance, and that a glimpse at the evolution of one of my works might interest some people. See the finished painting by clicking on the following link:

Very cool! It isn't too often you see a battle scene like this. So many limbs and horses to deal with xD Great job.

Yeah, it's really just a waiting game. They've 11 of my pieces on standby so we'll just have to see. If I can get maybe a quarter or so of those into the final cut then I'd consider it a success Cheers!

This is great! I also just looked at your sleeping Durin piece and I have to say, I like your line work even better than the coloured pieces. Please put up more!

Thank you very much! Well in the case of Durin and Aule, those two aren't line works as such but proper sketches that stand on their own. Maybe in future I'l add some more pencil work anyway!

The composition on this is very beautifully done - nicer than the Rohirrim one I think! This lineart is so nice and clear as well - amazing work!

Also whilst the battle going down hill is sort of Gwindor's fault, it's kind of harsh not to expect him to react after what was done to his brother in front of him. I 100% bet that Maedhros would have done the same if it was one of his brother's being mutilated in front of him!

As ever, my sincere thanks. I hope this looks better, since the Rohirrim piece is well over a decade old now! And hopefully the colour version lives up to the line work too.

As for Gwindor's choice here, I heartily agree. And if not Maedhros, then certainly at least the rashest of the Seven Sons Caranthir

Lucky you! I really love UT, and was so happy to read Silm chapters in LotR prose-style when I first happened upon it years ago. Especially the Narn. I much prefer that version to the more recent one from 2007 (other than the added material of course), for the fact that the archaic English remains intact. For example ...

'Hail Gurthang, iron of death, thou alone now remainest! But what lord or loyalty dost thou know, save the hand that wieldeth thee? From no blood wilt thou shrink! Wilt thou take Túrin Turambar? Wilt thou slay me swiftly?'

... just doesn't sound as good when you switch the 'thou's for 'you's, the 'remainest' for 'remain', or the 'wilt' for 'will', and so on

I haven't read the Sil in 35 years or so. I'll need to pick it up again.
